I am a total numpty(stop sniggering at the back).
Anyway,My 2610 now shows on the screen whenever i turn it on,'this unit is now a year old and needs updates' or something along those lines.I can click 'remind me later' and carry on using it BUT how the hell do i get these updates??
When i click on the Garmin website for updates it wants me credit card details( i dont have a credit card cos i am a dodgy geezer who pays with cash :D ).
When i open mapsource click 'help'...'check for software update' it cant seem to connect yet everything else seems to work ok.

Do i need to connect my GPS unit to the PC and do something?

Help would be greatly appreciated.(as it has been before).

I don't want to give you bad advice as I have the similar BMW Navigator 2 which may update differently. You could try speaking to Garmin directly on:

(0870) 8501242

Try asking for Mark Timms, he's a helpful guy.

it's telling you your mapping is out of date. v.8 came out recently & you have to pay if you want it (about £50 IIRC).

i imagine you need a credit card to complete the deal :nenau

If you registered your 2610 less than a year ago the update to version 8.0 is free of charge.

Mine came from Maplins, and the last the guy at Maplins told me was to hold off registering the unit as long as possible and he was right. :)

I have updated it now....not with V8 but with 4.25 on the V7 or whatever it was. :thumb :thumb

My GPS was exchanged on 25/06/2005 am i entitled to the free upgrade from garmin??I think i had an email telling me about it ages ago but couldn't figure out how it worked to get it.

There are three things that can be updated, when it comes down to it, and many people get confused:

1 - The firmware on the GPS device itself. Latest version for a 2610 is v2.80 I think. Free to update.
2 - The MapSource software that runs on your PC. Also free to update.
3 - The Maps themselves, these are not free to update, except for Garmin's special offer - if you buy a unit with older maps after a new version of the maps has been released.

The "nag screen" in the 2610 is telling you the maps are out of date, not the software. It's purely a money making exercise by Garmin :)

Unless you really need later maps (for example need coverage for a country that is not in the old version) I wouldn't bother about updating. I've got CN v5 and v7, and v7 is no more accurate for UK roads.

Another valid reason for buying newer maps would be if your GPS device is capable of using the "NT" maps which have extra features including full postcode search. But I don't think the 2610 supports these new features, so a moot point really.

Thanks for that info Mouse.....it was almost on par with Paneuropean's!! :D :thumb :thumb

Yes i meant the firmware i think. It's gotten rid of that update thing anyway!! :thumb :thumb
I aint fussed about getting upgraded maps but if i can have em for free then great!! :nenau

Way to go Mouse - keep on covering for me, I've been riding in Ukraine and Romania for the last week, and have not logged on to the internet for about 7 days now. Probably won't log on again for another 7 days...

BTW, Romania is great - good food, nice people, an easy language to figure out (and, most school age kids speak English), everything is really cheap - food, hotels, gas - surprisingly good roads, and awesome scenery. On the other hand, Ukraine is a complete rat-hole, corrupt cops stuffing their hand in your pocket everywhere, not to mention that you need a GS Adventure with knobbys on it to navigate the main intercity highways. Trust me on this one, don't EVER go to Ukraine.

Michael
