2720 Map Upgrade

I've looked and can't see a solution to this - if I've missed it, please point me in the right direction!

I have an upgrade DVD for NT Europe 2008. It is loaded on my PC and unlocked. I thought it transferred the maps to my 2720 but I have a message today telling me the maps were over a year old. Detail maps it says are NT v9.

So I am assuming that the 2008 gives me version 10 so how do I get the maps onto the unit?

If you try to select a mapset and transfer, it tells you that there's not enough memory. I have seen reference to a routine that transfers the data but I cannot see anything on the DVD.

Help required!!!

The 2720 is a bit special... You need to call Garmin and ask this question.

There should be an install program for the 2720 I think, and it will delete the old maps and put the new ones in there...

I also don't think the 2720 can use the NT maps, but I may be wrong on that...

I used the special Garmin Webupdater program that came with Mapsource - and which can be downloaded from the intenet as well - to upgrade my V8 maps to 2008 and it went through without a hitch.
The 2720 is an "NT" type unit that displays a birds-eye view, so you do have the correct disk.
It took over 1 hour to load the maps onto the unit from the PC.
Al may be right about contacting Garmin though - can't do any harm.

2720 Maps

When I loaded the new software NT2008 onto my PC it asked if I wanted to update my unit which I did straight away. As said in earlier post it took quite a long time to load. I didn't have any problems.

My 2720 is an American model which I bought off the guy that brought it back from the States. Despite re-registering it with Garmin and buying a 2008 NT Europe Update disk and unlock code, the previous owner had paid for the full Europe v9 version (non NT oddly enough), Garmin refused to help me when I had the same problem as the OP. I can load a big chunk of Europe into the supplementary memory but the v7 US mapping is still taking most of the memory. The 2008NT Upgrade disk does no updating of the connected GPSR at all.

If yours is a pukka European model you should get help from Garmin sorting it out, if they provide a clear out utility to enable your update then I would be most interested in a copy.

Well I ran thru the routine to upgrade the maps twice last night and both times it came up with an error saying the upgade had failed. I went to Edinburgh today and the GPS was fine - new maps installed (at least it says so). So by default I suppose I have succeded.

I've just spent three weeks in Canada guided by a tomtom - bunch of Cr*p compared to the Garmin IMHO.

2820 next!

Jeez, this is like groundhog day!

I now have the 2010 NT update for the 2720 and although Mapsource has the right maps, I have not been offered the opportunity to update the GPS maps.

You cannot transfer the maps as there is unsufficient memory. How do I update the map?

Me too, as you can see it was me that started that thread on Smelly Biker. It's less complicated than it appears, still something of a 'faff' but the results are good.

but is this the way to go when the GPS has always had the Europe base map and I just wnat to update to 2010? From what I recall, there was always a routine on the update CD to deal with the GPS unit map update.

The method I've used to convert my US 2720 to one that to all intents and purposes is now a European version is equally valid to update mapping for the same region. If you read the thread you'll see that users have used the technique to convert to US mapping and then back again to European mapping.

If I understand correctly you now have a NuMaps subscription and the downloaded maps won't install onto your 2720. The download has installed the mapping under Mapsource but not offered or proceeded on to install it onto your GPS? I'm assuming here that the GPS was plugged in and recognised as a Garmin GPS by the USB driver.

Going via my myGarmin account and looking at the update possibilities for my 2720 it says it's not compatible with the NuMaps service and I'll need to order a DVD. Now this may be down to the fact that I have a unit that originated from the US or it could be that all 2720s can't be used with the download service? This sort of bars me from the lifetime subscription option which is a shame. If you have a NuMaps subscription and its installed on Mapsource then there's hope for me as I can do my updates using the unofficial method as described on the Smelly Biker thread.

I called the excellent assist desk at Garmin and explained the problem. They then put onto the 'My Maps' section of my account, a version 2010.20 (as opposed to the 2010.10 on the DVD). Once this was down loaded, the .exe file looked for my 2720 and then installed Mapsource version 6.15.7 on my laptop and also updated the GPS to CN Europe NT 2010.20. Sorted!!

I haven't bought a subscription for map updates (although I may as and when I move on from the 2720). This was a one off purchase of the 2010 maps. If Garmin look like they are no longer going to support the 2720, the move may come sooner but at least I'm sorted for a year or so.

Thanks for the assistance with this, I shall bookmark the relevant information for the work around.

Despite starting off the discussion and some unsuccessful attempts at tinkering with stuff I knew nowt about it wasn't me that held the Holy Grail, that was TweakHanz and Chopper Dad and before them some unknown Dutch guy.

I assume that you used the appropriate map ID for City Nav 2010 NT? There's a different one for each mapping product. If you're using the fid value in your command line then it has to be the correct one. I understand that this is optional.

Did you have any supplementary mapping loaded onto your GPS? If you did then the larger size of the new mapping may mean that you've run out of memory. Ensure that you supplementary memory is cleared or reduced to a minor sea tile. Uploading via Mapsource 'send to device' will overwrite anything that's on there.

Will be a shame if this isn't possible anymore.
