The NT maps will only fit on the StreetPilot series (2610 on), AFAIK. Verily, us oiks with 276s are left with Ye Olde Mappinge Software, forsooth. Which is not compressed ...
In beta testing now:
Changes made from version 3.70 to 3.91:
Added support for latest Garmin map technology...

My guess is that it is the development of firmware for older units with this support that's delaying the release of CN ver. 8.

I've been following a loooooonnnnng discussion on a Dutch GPS forum about this, and the official Garmin position is:
Thank you for contacting Garmin Europe Support.

the 276c is not NT compatible so you will need to use the normal mapsource with your unit.

If you have any further queries please don't hesitate to contact us again.

So that's a no. For now.

Yes until the firmware and maps are properly released and available of course it isn't in any way supported.

I was merely pointing to what seems to be on the radar screen and probably will be available within weeks or perhaps months.

I spoke to Garmin UK last week, they said City Select will be replaced by City Navigator V8 and it is going to to realeased at the end of February/ beginning of March. Mind you, they did say that it was going to comming out at the end of January and that has past, so dont hold your breath.

A good bit of news for anybody who bought a Garmin unit with City Select V7 or City Navigator V7 after January 1st, will be entitled to a free upgrade. I checked, because I`m thinking of buying a 276c with the automotive kit, which is City Select V7, and wanted to be sure that I would be entitled. So I gave them a ring, I asked for written confirmation and this is what I recieved:

Hello Paul,

I can confirm that any product registered after the 1st January 2006 with software older than version 8 will be entitled to a free update to version 8.

Thank you

If you have any further questions please let me know.

I’ve got my name down with Garmin for the CN8 update for CS7, but I’ll be honest, if the mapping for northern Spain isn’t significantly improved I won’t be investing.
HMR, if you read this, is northern Spain any better???

Cheers, Martin

I agree. But the 276C is probably OK already. We are still waiting for the new firmware for SP3, GPS V and all the other really old devices that are not for sale any longer.

Well, it seems to be a step-by-step improvement. No quantum leap. At Costa Brava, for example, I can se a dramatic improvement already from V6 to V7.

When I look around in the area around Pamplona I can see that most villages are still without streets and the small cuntry-side roads are still not there.

Around a few villages, as the village Jaca, I notice real improvements:

Do you happen to know if full UK post codes will be searchable in the upgrades. I've a BM Nav 2 = 2610 and it only does the AB1 2 of AB1 2CD :(

If northern Spain is so much more detailed I can hope. :)

Thanks. :bow :bow :bow

I've got a Quest 2 which came with CN v8 preloaded. It does do full UK post code searches though I don't know if it would on a 2610.

Does this mean all of us with V6 can now register and get an upgrade to V8

Yes, Ring Garmin and tell them you interested in an upgrade to City Navigator v8, tell them what GPS you have and the software your currently using, they will look after you.

Yes, but you have to remember that there will be TWO versions of City Navigator: CN V8 and CN V8 NT (which is one of the reasons for dumping City Select, too many products to support). So Quest and 276 users will be going to CN V8, and Streetpilot users will be going to CN V8 NT.

Richard, I don`t know about V6 owners. Before you register your unit, contact garmin and check first.

The response from Garmin was concerning V7 upgrade.

Are you sure?

If there will be two formats, and that sounds reasonable, my guess would be that V8 will be for older models as the SP3 and V8NT will be for newer models where Garmin decides to upgrade the firmware.

So far the 276C is already OK for V8NT according to www.garmin.com. But the firmware for the SP3 has not been upgraded since 2004.

The Quest2 is already from the beginning compatible with V8NT and it doesn't seems to be economical for Garmin to maintain a separate firmware for Quest with a different map format. My guess is that we within a few days will see version 3.91 beta (or 4.0) of the Quest firmware on www.garmin.com.

I'm only guessing, maybe you have more reliable info?

Jimo give us call some time, have not seen you for ages, have you been out on one of the bikes recently.

I also have this model, its excellent, get the TT bar mount.

Be aware that the audio output is intended for a binacle speaker without any other amplification so when you feed it into an autocom or in ear monitors the volume will be way to high, you'll need 1000 ohnm resistors in the + and - wires of the audio output to avoid overloading the autocom or ear monitors.

In this (though sadly it's in Dutch) thread, the main Dutch sales point for Garmin state that they have been told that the "new mapping technology" refers to the Bluechart maps. So this is not the CN NT maps, sadly.

Like you, I'd love to see this happen, but I'm not holding my breath ...

Shit! I have info from Nick Meadow, Garmin UK, that implicitly indicates that what you say above is correct.

No big deal anyway. 128+128 to my SP3 took me anywhere I wanted. Now I have 128+512 to my 276C so I guess I'll survive. :)
