Ok, this will NOT be for everyone, and I'm sure some will scoff, but for some, it could be a really good bit of kit (that's what I'm hoping anyway)

Assuming that you go long distances on your bike, or wild camp, or go to 'events'

How interested would you be in a kit that gives you a second battery, isolated from the starter/normal battery, that charges intelligently (IE it only starts charging when the main battery is nearly fully charged, and gets isolated completely from the system when the bike is off)

It could be wired to , for example, a low power consumption LED floodlight on a telescopic pole, so you can park up, illuminate your camp site and not worry about having enough ooomph to start the bike in the morning.........at a sensible time (EG when the main battery gets to 13.5 volts), the secondary battery cuts out of the circuit, so you would never have a flat battery because you forgot to turn of the floodlight or just left it on too long

There will also be a 'BYPASS' switch, a big heavy duty switch that you can activate the second battery as a booster for the main one.....a DIY jump start kit, all contained on the bike :)

That bit is why I've designed the system.........I'm going to be doing a dozen or more very short trips a day soon, day in day out, none of which will let my main battery fully charge.....That's very likely to leave me with a flat battery at some point, even though I have a BRAND NEW motobatt fitted.

What I can do (when I've installed the extras) is just get the switch-over key out and add the power of the second battery to the first to get me out of the shit.........The bit about running ancillaries like a radio or a floodlight for camping is just another thing that I could EASILY add to it, and might have wider appeal than just having a second, backup battery always fully charged.

This is, I guess, aimed mainly at 1100/1150 owners who do not have an ABS module, as that's where I'm putting my second battery, but I see no reason why it couldn't work on other bikes, even with canbus, as it will be independent of the charging system, just attached from the existing battery.

I'm doing it on mine regardless, but if there is any interest, I'll document it all and will be able to make up a whole idiot proof system........the way I think it will work will mean all you would have to do is drop the second battery into the space where the ABS unit fits (and secure it) and connect two wires to the existing battery terminals. (the override/booster switch will probably fall behind the side panel, or I could make a mount for it under the seat with the appropriate wiring supplied)

Thoughts before I get stuck in? :popcorn

........ Or you could ride an RTP :thumb2

Interesting...didn't know they run twin batteries, although it makes total sense with the lights and stuff they have to leave running whilst engine is off.

I'll have a look to see if I can find out how theirs is done- I'm using a voltage sensitive relay to charge and separate the second battery, with a 100amp switch to bypass 'just in case'

The hole that the ABS unit leaves is perfect for a second battery, although it's different proportions to the primary one.

Don't forget, if battery #2 is an odessey type, then it doesn't have to be vertical, and you might be able to squidge in something bigger.

2nd battery

hi bill
would like to see you document your installation please

It will be a small leisure/traction type.......I'm still looking into that, but i want a proper deep cycle capability.

Sounds like a fantastic idea. Guess it's based on the twin battery systems you get for Land Rovers etc.

It's not for me though, sorry.

Fuck all chance of getting a jump start off that though :)

(I know you scoff at this Tim, but my main motivation for putting in a second battery isn't for campsite power, although that is a seriously useful thing for some maybe.)

Even a brand new, top quality battery won't be up to the task of 10-12 cold starts a day, with not enough re-charging distance in-between each cold start, and a third of the riding done in the dark.

This is primarily an emergency backup, but the incidental capability to run low power consumption LED floods with no risk to the starting battery is a great bonus :)

Fuck the bike off...and get one with a kick start (Are any new bikes fitted with this archaic, but reliable device?)........job jobbed.... :-)

Bill, that statement's simply wrong......... besides, if you were right, after two days you'd be back to square one:blast:D

I'm not scoffing at the idea ..... I'd considered it over a decade ago:beerjug:
