I currently ride an 09 1200GSA but would love a second bike that would fulfil the following criteria
1. dual purpose i.e. on road and (light) off road
2. Fun for me, 51 year old fart but suited to a new rider. My 22 year old son who is about to do his test.
3. fit within £3500 budget

There is a tempting KTM 640 LC4 available locally but I'm not sure it has ANY off road capabilities.

Any advice from you wise guys would be appreciated and Wapping - before you start I have looked on the net. That's a long story, - I'm still trying to get the fishing sorted out.

Thanks
Ken

I can only presume you're referring to a supermoto version since the 640 LC4in Adventure form is probably THE best duel purpose bike, with offroad bias, out there.

There are loads of bikes to choose from and they will all depend on what your most bias towards.

I too have a 2009GSA and over the past 18 months have had quite a few 2nd bikes, my thoughts are:

DR650 1994, quite big and heavy for off roading ok on road to a point.

xt225 1990, perfect for trails but not enough oomph for road use.

DR400sm 2005, ok on road to 60mphish, never got to take it off road as was stolen after 17 days :augie

KLE500 2005, Best on road bar far, good MPG and easily do 80mph, ok off road with the right tyres.

It really is a matter of choice and those above are my personal findings so no shouting at me anyone :)

Hope this helps

Got to be the XT660Z if you are only doing light off road stuff. Excellent on all roads except motorways, but 80mph cruising is possible.

Now I'm a 59 year old fart who when faced with the same dilemma went a different route.
An Aprilia RSV1000R. It must be the most beautiful bike I've ever owned and is just sooooo different from my battle hardened GS.
My first track day is in a couple of weeks and I'm scared already.
