3 years of owning and riding an HP2E

Great review Spout :clap:clap:clap

I've ridden a couple of them now and I can honestly say they are only for the clinically insane :D:D:D On road they are like a supermoto but with an overdose of Billy "whizz" and around Salisbury plain they are pure electric shock treatment to ya laughing gland.

Are they good, probably not. Forks are weak, bm build quality ain't what it should be, they are over priced, not particularly practical (compared to others such as the KTM) and there are very few places where you can really get the best out of them (in the UK).

Would I own one??????

HP2

Great write up. Thanks. I 've had my HP2 18 months. Absolutely wonderful machine. I have an 1150 GSA for Euro zone trips and occasional commute, Cardiff to Cambridge. Considering taking the HP2 to Salisbury Plain this sunday on a charidy ride. Anyone else going?

What he said

Spout, great write up. I've put 104,000 kms (65,000 miles for the ludites) on mine since I got it in 2005. I can't be riding it hard enough or perhaps I got a decent set of forks because they haven't been a problem other than a few seal replacements. Only drama for me has been:
  • 10K - replacement of complete wiring loom and CDU (at BMW's cost) due to catastrophic failure. Appears that Ali the Turk forgot a clip during assembly and the loom ending up rubbing through on a tank bracket
  • 70k - snapped the front universal off the drive shaft, BMW replaced it
  • 71k - required a complete clutch kit (bit of the old universal left in the gear box tore out the seal and dumped oil all over the clutch, can't get old clutch plates here so '07 plate fitted (requires larger basket, different gudgeon pins. etc.), BMW stumped up 50%, got a two year warranty on all the clutch bits though
  • 103k - clutch master cylinder seals gone. New master cylinder coming, suspect I'll end up paying for that.
Otherwise it just keeps going, and going really well. In November, a few mates and I managed a 6,500 km off-road adventure from the top to the bottom of New Zealand and back home again. The bike went like a dream, aside from the odd puncture or two, which I can and do fix myself. I reckon there's another 100km+ in it yet and look forward to putting those on it. It won't be sold while I can still ride it. Just too much fun :)
