Just bought a new laptop and wanting to purchase a 3yr warranty, not neccessarily from manufacturer (Acer) as they don't offer collect and return service. Anyone any suggestions?

= 2 year warranty on a now obselete machine. DON'T.

Agreed.

Rarely worth it with white goods or technology.

Most things can be fixed yourself using parts that will cost less than the warranty.....if the screen or something expensive fails, I wouldn't ever want to suggest that you accidentally drop it down the stairs then claim on your household insurance, but there are people who might consider it an option :augie

(I haven't had house/contents insurance for 20 years so stop glaring at me Mr Wapping :P)

my current laptop which is broken is not obsolete by any means and i'd much rather have forked out £70 2 years ago than the £600 I spent last week.
In any case I found an Acer warranty 3yr advantage pack in the office which hadn't been used so I'm now covered for 3 years.

warranty?

I made the misteak (sic) of taking out the said warranty on a Gateway several years ago when Laptops cost circa 2500 pounds. After a while, the thing died big time. Sent it back. Phoned them 3 times a week for 4 months. Was put in a queue. Each time, I sat in queue for an average of 45 mins, only to be told that they were awaiting parts. After 4 months a new laptop arrived at my door.
Remember warranty does not cover software anomalies.
Laptop you bought must be Gold Plated.
You are in Dell Business prices.
Myke.

Acer do collect & return. It works very well.

I bought an Acer for my lad when he started college 2 years ago. He can damage stuff when he tics as he has Tourette's syndrome, so I took out the accidental damage policy as well as the extended warranty.

They have proved good value and efficient. The lad has damaged the screen twice, the keyboard and a power supply. All fixed, no quibble.

I bought the laptop & insurance policies from laptopsdirect - here's the link for the bundle I bought - insurance, bag & mouse - for £45

There's a 3 year version for £79.
I also bought the Compucover accidental damage & theft policy

It's a collect and return service. I wouldn't expect a warranty to cover a software anomaly - accidental damage and parts will do me fine. And with regard to home contents insurance the excess on most insurance plans is the cost of the 3 year warranty.

Thanks Wessie - I was given incorrect info about the warranty and am glad to know it's collect and return and accidental damage.
