I recently hit 50,000 miles on my HP2.
And what better place than the western reaches of the Sahara desert to pass this milestone.
I keep thinking that with this mileage and over 6 years of ownership I should be looking for a replacement, but there’s no other bike out there that comes close to the HPs do anything (and do it well) ability. So again, it looks like it’s a keeper!
For those that want to know, here’s a quick run down of main servicing, replacements, breakages etc over its first 50,000 miles:
Oil and filter changes – 12No
Air filters – 10No
Sets of sparking plugs – 5No
Gearbox oil changes – 9No
Final drive oil changes – 10No
Front brake pads – 5No
Rear brake pads – 2No
Rear brake calliper – 1No
Front and rear brake fluid change – 2No
Rear tyres – 12No
Front tyres – 6No
Alternator belt – 1No
Steering head bearings – 2No
Headlight bulbs – 2No
Rear bulb – 1No
Set rear indicators – 1No
Ignition coil – 1No (showing signs of another failure now)
O2 sensors – 1No set
Battery – 2No (Odyssey)
Rear wheel spokes – 7No (one at a time!)
Rear shock lower bush – 1No
Front wheel spindle nut – 1No
Final drive oil seal – 4No
Final drive bearing – 1No
Driveshaft – 1No
Replacement final drive unit – 1No (damaged when driveshaft broke)
Front forks – 5No new pairs plus bushes etc (saga documented previously!)
Repair weld to exhaust bracket – broke at 49,955 miles (still on original silencer)
Cylinder head cover – 1No
Still on original air rear shock, which coped well on recent “off road” trip to Morocco, so I’m not looking to replace.
Clutch may need replacing soon, it’s not slipping but “feels” worn at the lever.
The engine has always vibrated badly, and no amount of throttle body balancing, valve clearance adjusting, sensor changing etc has cured it yet. Only annoying on motorways, so short of checking crankshaft balance I’ll have to continue to live with it.
There haven’t been many of the 50,000 miles I’ve not enjoyed. Glad I bought it.
