54plate R1200GS Dropped Valve

Warranty/Service History

1) Have you owned it since new?
No 1400 miles on clock and less than 6 months old - bought from same dealer who sold it originally

2) Has it been dealer serviced since new?
Yes

3) By the same dealer?
Yes

These are critical questions for BMW when assessing such a potential claim out of warranty.

Assuming US$ at 2 to the Pound...................about £2600 on current exchange rates

bmw more likely use the universal "f*ck you" dollar/sterling conversion table

$1 = £1 less a bit to look like they've made an effort, so £4800 then :D

Don't seriously expect to get any feedback from BM this side of the weekend but will update the thread with more when I hear from them. :rob

I have seen the link to the South African valve drop.

I heard about one on a GS on loan to the police (unverified - no idea on mileage).

Does anyone know of any other similiar events?:nenau

Thanks
Neil

Cant believe the piston damage
Repaired many a 450 ktm when they had valve problems & never had piston damage like that

Drop a valve at high revs and all hell breaks loose!

You could easily find a leg out of bed!

Greg

The ktm's i used to repair were supermoto & the valve head used to come off @ full chat still never smashed a piston like that

have they

given you a loan bike, just with gollon a bit close now you'd not want to miss out.

Llango - still booked in

Still dunno the ££$$£$ it will cost - need to have some idea before I can be sure what I will do about plans over the summer. Had worked out a full diary but may need to wind the horns in a bit. Hopefully I will be there one way or another!

What fuel have you been using? My local dealer mentioned that he'd had a GS in recently wih a blown engine and MBW had suggested it might have been due to the owner using Optimax fuel....

Were you using more than 15,000 rpm when it blew?

Or was it the old Duckhams Q20-50 that did it?

:augie

Not guilty

Nope - never tried it

Double nope - best guess based on 'feel' of the bike was 7,000rpm but that is based on the feel of the bike as I was watching the road. To put it another way I wouldn't put money on it but if you mean was it being thrashed? No. She burned quite a bit of oil anyway so I was used to checking levels regularly and after the incident oil levels looked OK (I did check) and the oil visible on the disassembled cylinder head in the dealers seemed clean and fresh.:nono

would make a few enquies about a secondhand engine if MBW dont want to play extended warranty

phone moto-works or similar.... pretty sure a low mileage motor out of a write-off bike would be heaps cheaper that paying BM fer a new one

it wasnt a brand new engine when it self destructed!!! had 16000miles on it

how much

Feedback from BMW UK

Just heard from the dealer. Nothing quantified yet but BM's response very encouraging on the parts front:thumb . Still waiting for full detail and will post when I hear but so far pretty good - won't be sorted for Llang. but should be done in time for the TTs

:hapybnce: :hogroast :wave

Now all I need is for Worcester to beat Sarries at the rugby this pm. Win or loose tonight there'll be a few    drinks!!

When I had a problem with a BMW car at 50k miles and 5 years, BM provided the parts and the main dealer where I had had the car serviced contributed the labour. Might be an idea to try for this sort of deal.

Looking Good!!

BMW UK have advised Clarks they will be covering parts and labour on main items requiring replacement, details follow but it looks like things will be sorted for the TT

More info soon I hope

Thank you BMW UK
Thank you Clarks

:thumb2 :thumb :clap :clap :bow :bow :bow

Fair play for BMW for doing that:clap :clap :clap :clap :clap

... but it's no more than they should have.... a fully BMW serviced bike at 16000..... not really fit for it's purpose if it couldn't do a lot more miles:D

Good work BMW... that will help customer relations :)

YIIIPPPPPEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!

THANKS BeeMMMM

THANKS Clarks

I have now got my bike back in time for the TT ferry and I am looking forward to the Thursday night departure at midnight (well... maybe not the motorway drag to Heysham and the hanging around).

The only bit left of the old engine is the left hand cylinder head!

See you guys on the island

Good to hear the bike is back on time.

If you've never been to the island before you'll love it :thumb2

Take it easy on the mountain :augie The last hill off the mountain has a drop half way down (I think, from Kates cafe down to the hotel) you'll leave the ground at about 120 Unless there is a speed limit this year 'then your'll not get off anything'.

Why not give Sillymoo a PM she'll be thrilled to hear from a fellow GSer visiting the IOM.

Val.
