6,000 mile service + annual....

Hi all

Yes, I said annual, not....oh never mind

Just had a quote from Woolaston Northampton to do a 6,000 mile service + annual (gearbox and brake fluid) on my 2008 GSA (annual due in May with circa 4,500 miles on it but I'm off to Europe in July where I'll be doing 2,500-3,000 miles).

quoted £252.08.


Thoughts? I've got to keep the warranty up!



2nd question.....I know tyres have been done to death in terms of WHAT tyre to fit, but WHEN do you choose to change yours? Sounds a stupid question (probably is!) but (barring damage) do you run yours to the limiter or change them once they get utterly squared or what?

You should be able to get the bike serviced at any VAT registered garage to keep the warranty up as long as they use approved bits.

Tyres? I run mine to just about the wear limiter but I do try and get in loads of twisty roads so mine probably feel better at the limiter than a bike thats been running along the motorways and has minimal wear on the sides but down to the TWI

I had my GS serviced very near the date of purchase as I had only covered 6k in the first and second years. So no annual service as such and only charged for the mileage service. If I hadn't reached the 6k (or 12/18 etc) service points in a year, I don't think I'd have been paying to have an annual service carried out. It's not like the oil goes off while it's doing nothing, is it ?

As for tyres, I run the rear down to about 2mm before changing (mine never gets badly squared off), the front will be changed when it starts to look iffy rather than depending on tread left (which usually means more than 2mm).

Without using an approved BMW Motorrad dealer for servicing, you will not be entitled to any goodwill repairs if outside of warranty by BMW under their terms and conditions. Caveat Emptor.

Useful to know but the op did ask about the servicing while still within the warranty period.
Saying that I got mine done for £200 for an 18k service + annual which I think is the same as a 6k+ annual at RGM so it`s only 50 quid more

Thanks for the feedback guys... interesting thoughts on "goodwill" claims - I'm looking at keeping the bike a while so this could be worthwhile, although after the warranty runs out I'm going to be doing most the stuff myself unless it's eye-wateringly difficult.

£327.27 for 6000 miles plus annual.

Struck me as very steep although did get a K1200S for the day - and NO I wouldn't change NO WAY NO DAY.

Thoughts on the price?

Not too steep, I paid £500 for my 6K + Annual at the lovely Park Lane dealership. On top of that, despite me dropping it in before 9am, and them telling me it would be ready the same day, they still charged me for the second day bike hire because it wasn't finished.

I've always avoided bitching about that dealership on this site, but I'll never buy from them again so who cares.

For me, anything up to £300 for the 6K + Annual seems fair. But my £500 + bill (including £40 bike hire) was rediculous, especialy considering how shoddy their customer service is.

Just collected my 2008 GS from Battersea after first annual service - £296 including vat and including loan bike for which they charged £25 (brand new GS - was to be a GSA but it wouldn't start!!). Took bike in on Monday morning, but it wasn't ready until Tuesday evening, and they agreed I could collect first thing Wednesday morning - they charged me for 1 day's loan bike only, and agreed not to charge me for another loaner when I bring the bike in again for the front springs replacement (waiting for a part from Germany so have to rebook).
Both Lisa and Dean were a pleasure to deal with, the bike was returned clean and running beautifully, and they also fixed the loose mirror glass which I had forgotten to mention to them. Price was perhaps a bit high but I expected that because it's in London and therefore you are paying London prices for the convenience (to me, at least).
Overall, very pleased.

No - just the bike hire at £25/day. To be fair to the shop, I didn't arrive back until 18:30 (30 minutes after they were scheduled to close) but they waited open for me and still took my money with a smile.

I had a 6000 done recently by Wollaston. I rang for quotes before I went there and they said £165 + brake fluid. I said why brake fluid, the bike's only 6 months old. He said, OK £165 then. When I went in to collect there was a bill for £349 or thereabouts. When I challenged the price it came down to £169 including the loan bike. Still not sure what I was supposed to be getting for the £165 but presumably not a full 6k service ?

Steppers is doing my 12000 on my 1150gsa in a couple of weeks,its interesting to read your posts guys,i had my 6000 and annual done this time last year at cannons and i was charged £392 so looks like i was robbed,why the fcuk are the charges so different?I know hourly rates and all that,but it must have the same job time for the same service,so why the big difference in price.....

The only differences between the 6000 mile and the 6000 mile + annual service is changing brake fluid and changing the gearbox oil. BMW recommend changing the gearbox oil every 2 years and brake fluid should be changed between 1-2 years depending on what model you have. Quite why this additional work should add so much to the bill for the normal 6k service is beyond me.

Back to the original question, at £300 for the service, that's about £50 per 1000 miles so doing it 1500 miles early you're only "loosing" £75. I'd get the service done before you go.

Tyres, usually put new ones on before a long trip if there's any doubt about them lasting. Tyres, less than £200 a pair and 5000 miles at a rough guess = £40 per 1000 miles.

So getting it serviced and new tyre on before the trip shouldn't mean you "loose" too much, and with fresh oil and tryes there should be a couple of less things to worry about. Assuming the people who service the bike / change the tyres do their job .....

Just had my 6000 mile + annual service done by Vines & cost £299-
Thought it was quite expensive, but now I think i did well. Vines have always seemed very fair. Nice people to deal with.
