I am of course a bit nervous of any thing going wrong and it affecting the warranty but I bust the bank to buy it so hopefully find a cheaper deal its not so bad for the 6ooo mile service as ive a bit of time to get over the initial outlay.

Just called the local dealer to book my GS 1200 LC in for its 600 mile service which I assume after only a week ago it had its PDi would be an oil change and quick check over.
they want £186.70 well that's not going to happen I will change the oil & filter myself. I don't mind paying that sort of money for a full service but I know a rip off when I see one.

Can you explain why you think it's a rip off? It's not cheap i grant you but it's not a rip off. Remember the dealers hourly rate is probably close to £80 per hour so by the time he's checked it over, done the oils etc he's not making a lot of money out of the deal.

maybe not quite a rip off but even so, the work only takes about 30 to 45 minutes if that. Sorry but I have done all my own servicing for the past bikes with no problems with selling them on or warranty issues.

I would guess that most people only have the first service then go elswhere or do it them selves for the rest of the time.

I suppose at the end of the day its personnel prefference and warranty concerns that make our minds up.

my main concern is that my local dealer cant get my bike in for another 2 weeks but I travel at least 500 miles a week so I may have to do it my self any way.

Its all good, but it doesn't explain 250 for the first service at Batersea, which is like THE BMW service facility, they not struggling to meet ends, there is so many bikes and cars on the parking that you could ride one a week for a year.

Hi All
I have been in to speak to my local dealer who was both very helpful in replying to my emails and in verbal communication, I did try and book it in for the 600 service and after speaking to them they were fully booked for the next 2 weeks, it was obvious I would go well over the 600 miles

in short the dealer gave me enough oil in a spare container for the final drive service and also gave me 10% discount on all the service parts oil and filter new oil seals for the drain / filler plugs

my bike did not require any software updates and the dealer told me that all I need to do is keep the receipts for the parts and the warranty is safe.

so in the end a good result, also regarding the service price the oil is very expensive Castrol 5w 40 power 1 fully synthetic (£17 per L) add the other parts and the price of £187 seems pretty fair so in fact my first thoughts were completely wrong and to be fair the dealer has been more than supportive too.

in other words I shall be booking it in for the 6000 service with them.

for those that are interested, having done 587 miles I drained the engine oil which was very clean,
and changed the filter
but when I drained the final drive the oil was black with plenty of metal on the magnetic drain plug.

now to start using it

I've been quoted 186 quid for my 1st service, it will be interesting to see if the price stands as I got rid of the stock crash bars and fitted Altrider ones, I believe they have to be removed to get the valve covers off!

1: If you know you are going to do 500 miles per week why didn't you book the 600 mile service with your supplying dealer before you picked up the bike?

2: I take it that your local dealer (NOG) is not your supplying dealer?

3: Have you had your service book stamped?

Hi I work for BMW and as such got my bike direct from the factory so my bike has not been to any dealers, as a staff sale it was PDi checked by our own technicians at BMW UK headquarters.

I had no specific delivery date all I knew was that I would be able to collect it towards the end of May


having not had services done by main dealers of any bike for the past 20 odd years I foolishly assumed a week in advance would be ample time to book a service, but as NOG said during our chat they have sold 40 of the new water cooled bikes already so obviously busier than normal. it was the same story at my next nearest dealer.

My service book has only been signed and dated by myself using the BMW original parts and oils I purchased from NOG, main dealer said there would be no problem regarding warranty and to just keep the receipts. no software update was needed on my bike as it had been done at the factory.

So all is good in my world time to go ride

There is no valve check at this service its mainly oil and final drive oil change, if your bike is an earlier bike it will have a software update you will know this if your bike has no pro plug under the seat, you will get the update and the plug will be supplied.

BMW called me in for software update, before first service.
It was done on the go in about 20 minutes.
My Pro plug was under the seat at the purchase.

I guess it all depends how big and how busy the dealer is.

Ha Ha very true they say look before you jump, but I work for BMW UK not a franchised dealer but in the dealers defence I have said in the previous comments that I was wrong and that the price was fair once I knew the type and cost of the oil that goes in the bike .

either way its a cracking bike and I love it, and will be having it serviced by NOG for the 6000 and on

Spoke to Clarks @ lickey Hills, first service £70 approx, not pre arranged.

So more cash to spend on extras I don't need.

enjoy your new bike they are brilliant I love mine, you've got a good deal the oil alone is £76. just so you know the oil is Castrol 5w 40 fully synthetic Power 1 Racing no if or buts this is the oil that should be in it, its some thing to do with the slipper clutch.

my main reason for posting was my initial shock at the service price this my first brand new bike since 1997 but after getting all the facts it is in fact a fair price.

PS I love the bike, Ive now covered 400 miles so looking forwards to trying it out fully after the oil service.

Well if you work for BMW UK and find it hard to access the right facts & make sure you're acquainted with what oil to put in the new 12GS WC

There's not much hope for the rest of us
