So she's just been in for the 6k service.

£183.53

Now I realise that franchise dealer servicing will always be a bit more expensive but that seems like a LOT of money for what was essentially an oil change.

Or am I just getting tight in my old age?

My 6k service was £200 which I was told included brake fluid changes. On one hand that makes £200 seem more reasonable but I was surprised to hear it was required in the 6k.

You're getting tight.:rob That's a good price.

BMW now specify a brake fluid change at the first annual service and then every two years thereafter.

It's known as price tolerance keep putting up the price till people complain. JJH

Yeah I'm with this theory. Is £200 really reasonable?

To be fair they did the brake fluid too, I should have mentioned that.

However - I have fixed my own cars/bikes for years and I know whats involved so I'm still a bit taken aback by the price tag for such a simple job.

And yes I could have done the work myself and used approved parts but I have some corrosion issues and was concerned that my warranty could be questioned.

On that point....how do recalls and "campaigns" work if you do your own servicing?

I had a new battery and side stand switch fitted FOC today - but I was told it wasn't an official "recall" just a "campaign" - which means BMW do not contact you about it, its just done the next time your bike is in a dealership. So how would that work have been completed if I had chosen to service my own bike?

So how much did you pay for the 'bike? Peanuts?

FFS :blast

No I paid plenty for the bike Micky but I'm not sure thats a valid argument to justify inflated servicing costs!

Like I said - I may be getting tight, I just thought it seemed pricey for a very basic service with no time consuming work (valve clearances, etc)

Seems reasonable to me. Porsche major service just cost me £1400. £200? Pah! Though the porker 20,000 service interval would be appreciated on the GS.

Yes spot on the price isn't that bad when you add up the materials the oil is 5w 40 which is a shade under £80 then the oil filter and also the oil for the final drive so the dealer makes around £75 in labour so not a rip off at all. When I first heard the cost I also thought it was way too expensive but it's not when you break it down.

I do my own servicing and it still costs me about £90

My 6600 service on a 5 month old bike
00001111- BMW service £32.81
1100611 - Oil change £13.13
Filter £11.24
Gasket £0.36

Total including VAT £69.05

The oil was pre purchased, 4 changes for £90.00

So my total 6000 mile service at one of Yorkshires main BMW dealers was £91.55.
Still more than my Ford Focus annual service but not too bad.

PS my first 600 mile service was £100 including VAT

Do you balk at the price of a sandwich from M&S - thinking "I could make one in my kitchen for 30p!"

Don't forget the 20% VAT included in the dealer's bill, and profit? You know - that element that perhaps your own employer enjoys - in order to pay your wages?

No body else changes brake fluid at one year! If it will last 2 years after this how come it needs changing at the first year?? Nothing to do with the number of people who trade their bikes before the 2 year warranty runs out??

So that included the brake fluid service as well? Did you not ask how much the service would cost before you booked the bike in?

The dealer has probably made £20-£30 profit on your service, at the most. You'll be one of the first to moan if they close down one day, due to not making any money.

I don't get it when people moan about how they think a service is expensive. If money is such a worry, phone three dealers first, and go to the cheapest. Or go to an independent. Or do it yourself. It's not rocket science.

The official reason is that the bike could for example have been stood in a showroom for 6 months before you picked it up and so the fluid is over 12 months old when it has it's first service.
Being as they know the build date not really an excuse if the bike was picked up by the owner just as soon as it landed.

So in answer to my question "am I getting tight?" - you would say "yes"?

:)

Point taken.

When you see it broken down and explained by those more knowledgable than me - it makes more sense - but isn't that the point of a forum? Share and learn??
