6000 mile service

I go away to Italy in just over 3 weeks. I need to get another 2000 miles on the bike so I can get the 6000 mile service before I go.

How many miles short of 6000 is acceptable for the service if I fall short?

Mate, it’s your bike, if you want to service it before the required miles, that’s up to you. The 6000 miles is only a reference point for regular servicing, not an issue to do early, can be an issue to do late if you happen to have a warranty claim.

How long are you going to Italy for? Riding there and back the long way, plus a few passes shouldn’t be much more than 3000 miles all in, depending on your route/ time away etc.

Just to let you know, I contacted the dealer, and they said 4500-5000 would be the lowest allowed to be ok with warranty!

I think that's tosh. Service receptionists frequently don't have a clue. They make it up as they go along. The servicing requirement is the sooner of 6000 miles or 12 months since the last service. A mate's dealer service reception insisted the 6000 mile service was due at 6000 miles, despite the first service being done at 600 miles. My dealer wrote into the service book the 6000 mile service was due at 6719 miles at the first service was done at 719 miles.

Given servicing lead times down here, I hope you've at least booked it in.

A service is required before a maximum of 6000 miles or 12months (obviously they do allow bit extra maybe 7000 miles), however if you decide to have a service at 3000 miles there is no problem provided the next service is before 3000 + 6000 ie 9000 miles.

He may be correct if you intend to have the service at say 4000 miles and the next one at the 12000 miles as the gap then becomes 8000 miles but as long as your next service is within 6000 miles there is nothing wrong!

Wasn't asking anything, I was letting people know the outcome if they ever have the same scenario. It was a statement, not a question.

May be the dealer meant that the next sevice still would be performed at 12K, so if You did it at 4,5K, the gap would be 7,5K to next service.
But that is not what most people do, or even think of. If you do service at 4K, next service due would be at 10K, and it should not have any effect on the warranty.


If Your dealer is so (excuse my French) stupid, then I would regard them not trustworthy to perform a proper service. Suggest you take Your bike to a place where they demonstrate some common sense.

Many people have told me, 1000 miles over or under is ok, I also called 2 other dealerships, and they said the same, however, best not to take it over the 6000.

I have complete faith in my dealer. I have been buying bikes of them for the last 10 years.

However, there are other dealers I would never leave my bike with though!!!

Ok, give the dealer the benefit of doubt.

I do not know the current milage of your bike.
But if a dealer even suggests that a warranty will be invalidated if you decide to change oil and do whatever a 6K service implay at say 4K, and set next service to 10K, then this dealer does not deserve Your loyalty because that is BS of third degree.
