660 Quirks

Did you know this?

After MANY issues with my MP3 player (see this http://www.ukgser.com/forums/showthread.php?t=200643) I was told by Garmion (lack of) support, that you can't ever delete any favorites from your device! :eek so once full, your memory wont accept any more favorites, even if you delete them, the unit saves them. So what then? Garmin support say, "Oh but you can save thousands of favorites" I filled up 8GB's of SD card in just 2 days with ???stuff?? generated by the Zumo and the unit wont navigate 'cos the memory is full. And before you say it, yes i took the card out, deleted the files, music, in fact everything and when re-booted, the memory is still full:blast. Garmin say, "It might need an update?" As you read i'm looking at my home insurance policy small print regarding accidentally jumping up & down on my new Zumo:pullface. eBay here I come

Wrong, it simply over writes the old ones.

Not had or heard of that problem before. Sounds like you may be doing something very wrong, as my 660 never puts anything on the SD card unless I tell it to, ie share a route etc.

This used to happen to me with my 2610, and it also happens in rural wales. So I don't think it's a problem with the 660 specifically. Tomtom mapping may be better.
I found it quite fun when on holiday in France - several times ended up on unpaved roads..

Its Garmin's mapping, having had 2610/550/660 its always been the same wherever you are and to be fair the shortcuts are normally very nice.

If you're not in a rush for the Eurotunnel train back to England: let the Garmin map a route to the French terminal avoiding toll/motorways, you'll see exactly what the software was designed to do :-)

My 660 seems to do exactly the opposite ie keeps sending me back to the major roads. Even if I head off on a back road or shortcut that I know, the 660 doesn't recalculate based on the route I have taken, it just keeps trying to send me back to its original route. Recalculate is set to Auto. I think Tomtom is better in this respect, I used one in the car and it seemed to have better "local knowledge" so it would direct you down the routes that weren't obvious but the locals know are faster because of traffic or bad junctions.

On the SP3 and 2610 for certain, to improve recalculation speeds, and the SP3 needed this eg 5 minutes for a few hundred miles journey :( they changed the alogarithms so that it would have 3 tries at getting you back onto the original route irrespective of the other settings. This might be a quicker way of recalculating, but it didn't always give a sensible answer or an answer you were expecting. I think the zumo 550 also uses this logic.

Just got back from Europe and found a couple of interesting things:

1. Fave's
- you cannot view the information associated with a favourite. In Mapsource, i add the address in the information field, but cannot view this - to check the house number for example. I've given up managing these - there does not appear to be a good 'sync' as i now have duplicate contacts.

2. Play list genre's
- i have something like 450 songs classified as pop. Some times it would not see the files (restart required) and almost always i'd need to start the media player. This did not happen with my comedy, country and hip-hop folders which have <100 tracks each and would restart playing at startup.

3. Startup
- i have a PIN code which i have to quickly enter and then mute the music if i'm checking things out in a cafe . I'd prefer this to start when the unit is logged in and ready to go. It's funny to think of someone stealing the unit and can only play Jonny Cash tracks...

4. Auto-zoom
- there appears to be 2 zoom levels one for <50mph and another for >50. I zoomed in and out during this trip and now the level of zoom is all wrong. Counldn't find a reset zoom level.
