Hi all,

I have owned a 2002 1150gs for just over 2 years. It has around 101,000 miles on the clock and I thoroughly enjoy owning it. It is totally reliable and starts first time every time……..BUT……it does seem to have a few wiring quirks.

When you switch the bike on to start no warning lights show (including no oil pressure light and it is a non-abs version) The gear indicator screen works fine so you know you are in neutral. Once the bike has run for a while and when neutral is selected the neutral light comes on a little dimmer than usual along with the charging light (no issues with battery). I believe this may all be due to the wiring loom getting old and playing up (a common issue I believe) Is it worth the time, effort and cost to have the loom sorted or just accept that a 23 year old bike comes with a few quirks. Any advice would be most welcome

Split the tape on the loom up at the headstock to the clocks

there are 2 or 3 common earth points, they corrode and don't complete a circuit

Yours must be quite bad because you normally get a ground through another light circuit causing all sorts of curious issues

Anyway strip the outer sheath back find where the Brown wires come together and strip, clean and remake the common connection

It sounds like the earths in the short loom that runs from the instruments and plugs in under the tank.
There’s a large group of earth wires all exposed and crimped together in the loom. The outer shesth on the loom is open at both ends, allowing water in
The bend in the loom, where the water sits, just happens to be where the earths are all crimped together. Which over time turns to a green mush/verdigris.

Cut outer covering, clean up the earths. And afterwards seal the top end to stop water entering
