I've just put an 80w H7 in the 1200GS to replace a blown dipped beam bulb.

I'm sure, I'd be better with a PIAA or HID setup but is this bulb likely to melt my reflector?

Thanks
Steve

:nono Personally I would stick to what the book suggests, ie a 55 watt. The cable is NOT designed to take the extra load, never mind about the reflector melting.

BTW welcome to the site, but you may care to pass by the newbie section just to say hello.

I'm new to the GS12, but over the years I've used high wattage lamps in various bikes, several BM K series, Triumph Tiger's, Honda's, Yamaha, Guzzi and never experienced any problems with melting wires or whatever.
Typically the lamps I used were "rally" lamps, e.g. 100/80 to replace 55/50 H4's.
I don't know much about the CAN Bus system, but I don't think that modern manufacturing technology builds in such tight tolerances that a 50% increase in power to one lamp would result in disasters like melting wire and reflectors.
That's my twopenn'orth.

And anyway, is it not a moot point?, rather than just use a higher rated lamp, why not use one of the latest superduper bluwhitesilver H7's that are available now. They are more efficient (apparently) in converting current into light rather than heat. Colebatch pointed me at an article in Autocar I think it was that tested and rated these lamps, you'll find it in here somewhere with a search. Philips and Osram were the best if I remember.

Thanks very much, it's a short term solution to a blown bulb. That being said I don't want it to melt the plastic reflector.

Yes, really fancy a PIAA bulb, it's just a case of finding one at the right money.

Steve

PS Have had a couple of hundered past posts but for some reason my account disappeared so needed to re register.

there might be a PIAA on the FS & W section over the weekend, beter re register quick;)

Canbus might well shut it down anyway, with it drawing too much current. Its clever and helpful like that don't you know :)
