I am looking to purchase one of this model and would appreciate any potential defects to look for. The bike has around 50000miles and has had the Wunderlich 1000cc kit fitted along with an oil cooler.

I'm guessing that's the one on bikesales. If you haven't already check the engine/frames numbers here to make sure it's a genuine Basic -http://www.bmbikes.co.uk/enginechassis.htm

Comes in at 7350 quid so that may help UK inmates put it in perspective.

Compare it to to the pics in the Basic section.

IMO it's a bit exxy for what it is .

Yes, I've checked the Vin no and it is a R80GS Basic build date 06/96. Yes compared to the GSPD's it's expensive but collectible ??

Hard to guage its collectability in Oz because it's a blow in model. For someone wanting to put together an R80 off road collection it would have appeal as would a Kalahari. The fact that it has the parts to return it to bog standard is a plus for a collector. An R80 PD would be a surer bet as an investment. Depends on your reason for buying I suppose.

That bike has been advertised for a while, I think, which may reflect price or demand. May also give you an in for negotiating a better price.

Have you ridden one? If you want it as a rider then a lengthy test ride would be a good idea. I had an insistent bloke chasing me for my R100GSPD, eventually he had a test ride and lost interest straight away -couldn't make the adjustment from an R1200GSA  :D Sometimes the taste is not as good as the smell.

I just had a look - very nice but pretty pricey. Almost a shame to ride it. You have a few HP2s for sale over there too - Mmmmmm

Molahs, any action on the Basic?
Sorry mate, Have just returned from Birdsville. I'm still negotiating but the owner has a fairly firm price, I,m looking to see what I can sell !! The main attraction is the weight, I'll be 70 this year and whilst I could p/u R100GSPD and even 1150 GS my lifting capabilities are deteriorating !!! There is a low km r100gspd in wa but when they stripped the final drive they didn't do a circlip mod !! And done by an official BM mechanic. A local guru can do a complete rebuild of R80GS for around $18K. And to yr previous comment, I have owned a R100GSPD and was foolish enough to sell it.

I'm a repeat offender at this :D

Have you looked at the 80G/S with PD fittings that is currently on ebay?
Yes I saw the 80G/S on ebay. I think the seller is looking for a lot more than 10K. It's 13 years older than the Basic and weight is probably similar. It may be more collectable but that's not a priority as this will be my last bike ?? I've been saying that for a while !!!

I'm also considering have Paul Rooney build a bike, expensive but as this is my last bike maybe cost effective? It will be an airhead in todays technology YES ? May not have the resale but what do i care when I'm floating on ashes in the wind. I'll be cremated and my ashes wherever my daughter decides to fly !

Molahs , i`m toying with selling my HPN . It started life as a Basic and was sent to HPN .It is rallysport spec . PM me if your interested .

And how do you get it registered once reassembled ?

Can't be that hard as there are blokes regularly bringing in containers of US bikes that are sold for road use. Also plenty of grey import bikes on Oz roads. Starting point would be to ring an importer and get the heads up, several advertise in Motorcycle Trader.

Rego varies from state to state, but in SA you simply rock up at the testing/ inspection centre with all your paperwork, and the guys give the bike a good going over.

Their main concern seems to be that you are not rebirthing a bike which has been stolen or written off in Oz.

All the original lights , indicators, mirrors must be fitted, or be in accordance with the Oz regs for the year of manufacture, but the guys who inspected mine were fairly laid back about the whole process.

Original low mileage Basics still exist but are few and far between hence they command premium prices and you have to be prepared to "travel" to get them, but they are worth it! :D
