A bit mean spirited

The orginisers have said they feel let doon by the protestors :blast

I just got back yesterday from this and feel a little bit cheated. I spent 6 months training spent well over £500 on accommodation and food for me and the wife and parts for the bike. I was one of the lucky ones that got stopped at the bottom of the hill before hitting the tacks. I can assure you there were loads of people hurt maybe not seriously but they were hurt none the less.
After 43miles we had to wait for an hour and a half before being allowed to continue but they cut the route short by 7 miles. After all that training and money I have no idea how I would have done over the whole course. All credit goes to the marshals they handled a difficult situation very well.

Sixpack

Aside from the humour there is a really depressing issue here. This is the only road event in the UK where they close the roads, it opens the way for other events such as motorcycle races a la TT. The local(s) in question has made it clear that they only want the road to be used for cars, an attitude which reinforces their perceived dominance on the road and impinges on our safety.

I have happy memories from the late 70's and early 80's of the 6 day trials in Glencoe and Fort William using short sections of the road between off road sites. This policy was abandoned as the number of cars on the road made it unsafe for them to race. It was great to sit by the roadside and watch these guys belt round corners on knobbly tyres.

So, I'm not happy that these two wheeled cousins of ours have had an event sabotaged, the same could happen to us in the future. It makes further events more expensive to run as we would need street sweepers to drive the entire course and police to monitor it - a waste of time and money that could go towards good causes instead.

Perhaps we could volunteer to patrol the closed off road next year, giving us a chance to hit some real open road and demonstrate the viability of TT style road racing in Scotland?

Not many voices here from the other side of the fence. Vandalism is out of order but I think you are overlooking the strength of opinion amongst the locals who were inconvenienced by this event.

I don't much care either way as I did not have to try and drive through the area this year like I had to two years ago. However it would appear that £32,000 of my council tax money was given to the organisers for this event and I am not too pleased about that.

This is not a group of cyclists getting together to have a race to raise money for charity although many of the riders use the event to raise much needed sponsorship for charities. It is a commercial event run by a private company and participants have to pay £56 to enter. See here www.imgevents.co.uk

Chair of the community council resident at Bridge of Gaur arrested and charged - apparently also a church elder - a typical profile for a nimby...

I'm gonna let his tyres down next time I'm passing.
