Hi guys and gals,just thought i would mention something about my crash bars.As some of you know screwing steel bolts into alloy is a recipe for corrosion,mismatched metals etc.Anyway four weeks ago i fitted my crash bars and in my hurry to get them done i neglected to put copper grease around the threads so today i remembered and decided to unbolt and grease them.Already in only four weeks the alloy threads in the engine have started to powder,so people if you have not copper greased yours now might be a good time before the bike gets to old and you start stripping threads [:(]

I'd have thought that copper grease might make galvanic corrosion worse,

You might well be right,i`m not a metalurgist,i always use copper grease on bolts and so far have had no problems.Any metalurgists out there?
 
we work in the marine trade and the royal national lifeboats we service and refit have huge numbers of fastenings into alloy which is regularlly doused in seawater their specification is to use A4 bolts with denso paste smeared on them ,it seems to do the trick

we have found that sometimes the copaslip and certain grades of alloy can react very badly particularly if it is somewhere damp
 
If you coppaslip them, you are providing a nice conductor for the more noble steel to munch it's way through the ally.

Use something non-conductive if you think corrosion's going to be a problem.

Or weld 10kg 'MG Duff' anodes to each side of your crashbars.:D

mg duff anodes! nuntin but ra best for klankers. We hae tae buy the cheapie generic type us puir boat builders

If I used stainless fasteners with copperslip, when I fitted my engine bars, could this still cause a later problem:comfort
