A confession....

After test riding a brace of RT's on Saturday I think my GS ownership days are numbered. Tried an 1100RT which was okay but very ponderous. Not my cup of tea. Then tried an 1150RT which was much better. It handles, though not as well as the GS natch, it had good performance and I was well protected from the slightly inclement weather.

Returning home on my GS I was struck by it's 'flickability' and eager performance. Mind you I was cold and wet by the time I arrived home so it's not all good news.

If I can do the deal then look forward to a few bits and pieces going up on the for sale board.

In the end I didn't change to an RT. Okay they have much better weather protection and all but having done 300 miles on my GS on Friday I'm going to stick with it. The fact is that the GS is more fun to ride. When I'm riding in the middle of next winter I'll just wear another jumper, put the heated grips on and remember my run on the A57 on Friday.

Warms the cockles :D

Oh and the sheepskin I bought on Thursday really helps too !

I was out with the Balderston crowd last night on a run to the Lifeboat Inn at Thorsham (sp?) and there were a lot of RT's all blatting along merrily. I'm starting to think a test ride might be in order.

Has anyone else found this ? [/B][/QUOTE]

The RT may not get folks here excited and most seem embarassed to even consider it, but for long term ownership...it's a better tool.

When the Storm trooper thing is eclipsed by sore bum, rattled head syndrome..and the height of the thing and ugliness has finally got to you..and you find that it's fairly useless off road in comparison with lighter others....and when you realise that the RT gives very little away in performance...and gives back so much long distance comfort, especially when cold and wet.....

just try one. It will grow on you very quickly.

But if you are tall (6 ft plus), be prepared to get a taller screen..get the right one and you really can ride in turbulence free silence!

But the RT IS a little less involving, obviously. I dealt with that by finding something very basic as a second bike for those Grin factor sunny days when a brief hop around the countryside was in order.

But the handling of an Rt1150 will still amaze you. Ridden well, it is as quick round the twisties as most of it's brethren. It also enjoys a good spanking for a large bird.

Time to duck below the parapet. Fat birds rule..

Ben.

As someone commented - somewhere - an well-ridden RT can keep up with the sports crowd, and the sports crowd cannot keep up with a well-ridden GS...:D

I experienced this first hand on the KNMV Midweek tour of Germany/Austria country roads.
I don't think one should compare the RT to the GS - the GS is not simply an RT without the plastic.

For a comparison, see the BMW GS page on www.micapeak.com.

Out of four RT's I tried only one felt revvy and eager to go. The others all felt rather 'stodgy' and two were definitely hard work on the throttle. A twin spark was suggested as being better but the price was too much for me.

Yes my GS is uncomfy, at least until I purchased a sheepskin last Thursday, and it is windy at times, MRA without tobinators for the moment :thumb , but I've decided that I like the way it goes, handles and it's idiosyncratic looks.

So I'm sorted now :D
