A dummys guide to fitting an extra accessory socket

So today i fitted an extra socket to my 1250 Rallye, so I can use items that will work outside the can bus system, for example a small bike compressor for inflating the tyres. There has been a few queries lately on the forum ,So i thought i would show in pictures how i did mine.

I used the din type socket form Nippy Norms https://www.nippynormans.com/chargers-and-sockets/charging-and-sockets/din-size-socket-kit-12v-5a-including-fuse

First off I remove the panel over the battery, threaded the red and black cables under the tank, into the battery area. On the opposite side panel, I drilled an 18mm Hole

i place the socket through the hole and tight up the stainless washer on the rear.

the cables come with ring type washers on them for connecting to the power. The black goes to the battery ( no battery removal required) and the red goes to the live on the frame, this is under the red cap.

Replace the red cap

take up the slack in the cables and fit the inline fuse , I fitted it so its easy enough to get to,under the seat. tidy the cables up pushing them into the tray

I opted for the Din socket due to my accessories having a din plug, There is one of these socket kits available from NN with a larger cigarette socket too, so you have a choice. I use the din to cigarette socket adapter if I need to.

Hi, Good job. When I fitted this socket I upgraded the inline fuse to 10A as the Airman tyre inflation compressor runs higher than the 7.5A fuse supplied.

yep i too did that . also carry a spare one on me while riding
 
Can somebody please explain why these WCs have the LIVE on the frame ? :nenau

They don't, there is an easy accessible stud that is mounted on the side of the bike, it is not actually on the frame, it is isolated from the frame (i.e. the bike is negative earth so the positive can't be on the frame).

I might just leave the din plug under the seat which is where my oxford optimiser lead has been sitting. I then just need to find a din to optimiser lead. One must exist!
 
Red cap ?... Had 3 LC's none of them have had the red cap??
 
This looks easy enough to do..... so why have I not got round to do it yet.

If it's wired as you describe (permanently live) then soldering up a simple optimiser to male DIN lead (get the polarity right!) makes charging the battery super easy, esp if the bike mounted DIN is accessible without seat removal.

My optimiser's quite old but its small two-contact block connector is a part commonly used in model making, and available for pennies on ebay.

Thanks Paul. Two-contact block connector eh? Will take a photo of mine tomorrow as when I looked a while back ‘sae’ or something of the sort came up.
 
Since this is direct to battery am I correct in thinking you could hook a trickle charge up ? Wouldn't need the expensive BMW type.

This kind of thing. I think that in the model making world they use them similarly, eg to plug a charger into the cell of a boat or whatever. The one in the pic cost me about 80p for male plus female.

That’s the fella I think Paul. Looks the same. Square one side and the other rounded on one face.

Name of that connector...took me a bit of time to find the optimiser type

Female and Male 2 Pin 20AWG L6.2-2P Tamiya 30cm Wire Connectors
