Hello everybody

I recently became the owner of a R1150GS model of 2001. The bike although it has 58000 kilometers on the clock is in a very good condition and all the service has been done by BMW.

As a new owner I have a few questions that you might be able to answer.

1. I am quite tall (2m) and I find the riding position a bit uncofortable. I have heard that there are 2 seat types the low and the high, any idea where I can get the high one and how much is going to cost? Is the high seat one piece or is still indipendent ?

2. Also because of my height there is a problem with the wind. Any suggestions for a replacement screen? I have an MRA vario screen on my Varadero and works really good has anyone tried the same screen on the GS?

3. I noticed a small leak on the rear rubber seal on the axle is this normal?

4. Yesterday after filling the tank a weird noise accured it sounds like wistling/ airplane turbine... they told me that it might be the fuel pump or the fuel filter and that the sound might go on the next refuel.

5. Whenever I start the bike after a long stand still there is a sharp sound like when you sharpen knives. any Idea?

Thats it for know thank you in advance I am glad to be part of this foroum

Hello everybody

I recently became the owner of a R1150GS model of 2001. The bike although it has 58000 kilometers on the clock is in a very good condition and all the service has been done by BMW.

As a new owner I have a few questions that you might be able to answer.

The high seat will look the same - you can though have your own seat redone to your own specs. lots of options for that job. you can also think about raising the handlebars - this can help a lot (I'm 1.98m btw)

2. Also because of my height there is a problem with the wind. Any suggestions for a replacement screen? I have an MRA vario screen on my Varadero and works really good has anyone tried the same screen on the GS?

I have an MRA - essential kit IMHO - available at a very good price from JAWS on this site. cheaper than anywhere else - in clear or smoke.

3. I noticed a small leak on the rear rubber seal on the axle is this normal?

completely normal.. its fixable - but can wait until a service. the amount that leaks is absolutely minute - always looks worse than it is though. you can always take off the fill bolt and look at the level if you're really concerned.

4. Yesterday after filling the tank a weird noise accured it sounds like wistling/ airplane turbine... they told me that it might be the fuel pump or the fuel filter and that the sound might go on the next refuel.

very likely.

5. Whenever I start the bike after a long stand still there is a sharp sound like when you sharpen knives. any Idea?

They make a lot of strange noises - very few of which are anything to worry about.

That will be the starter motor sticking, serves you right for not using it enough :aidan

Don't worry about it, don't forget to wear earplugs to filter out the myriad of noises these tractor engined bikes make.

There are 2 seat hights, take off your seat and look you will see where the front cilps on you have 2 options.

Screen I bought mine with a touring screen on (no idea what make but its the size of a barn door) didn't like it so put the original one back on and experimented with the various adjustments i now have it perfect for me.

Is the shaft boot leak oil or just dirty water? I often pop mine off just to check sometimes it has water in (from washing? or rain?)

Golden rule wear earplugs.

oh I'm 6ft and its bloody comfy for me. seating & wind protection.

:thumb2 Ditto to most of above - I am 6'2" and have made bike much more comfortable (ridden 36k in last 18 months; most covered in one sitting = 2100 miles in 42 hours) by adding MRA Vario screen (from Jaws); raising bars by 2.5cm and lowering footpegs (both bought from migsel.com); and putting seat on higher setting and adding airhawk seat pad.
Earplugs definitely recommended - if I ever ride the bike without earplugs I spend the whole time worrying about all the odd noises!

I am aware that the seat has two positions but I was under the impresion that there are two different types of seat. Could you post some pictures of your seat pad attached to your seat?
The lower footpegs and the higher hanlebar seems to be a good solution as currently my legs hit the cylinder heads sometimes !!!!
any other suppliers other than migsel?

Nippy Normans sell Fastway Footpegs and also handlebar risers. I use both and they're great.

I'm 6'2" and got a Wunderlich touring screen and some tobinators to adjust the height and angle. Makes a big difference.

One thing to remember is don't twist the throttle when starting the bike. If it's cold use the fast idle switch on the left handlebar.

I've been riding without earplugs for the last couple of weeks while they were being repaired and I thought my bike was in its last death throes, but it really is normal for a BMW.

Sorry - can't do photos at moment (laid up in bed with broken femur) - also put sheepskin obtained from Lambland on top of seat pad to raise even further. There are several suppliers of risers and footpegs - I bought from migsel as seemed most reasonably priced and have worked well to date after a year's use.

I prefer the higher seat option.. mine has a seat height of 37" which is perfect for me. Much prefer that to lower pegs and all that implies - reduced clearance when cornering? uh uh - no no.

lifting the bars with 25mm risers helped enormously too.

Send your seat to a specialist seat upholsterer like Tony Archer. tell him what you want - an extra 2 or 3 inches + improved comfort. and there you go.
