A funny rattle?

Re: Shake rattle and roll!!

I have to say that from my own experience of having ridden a four pot jap bike and now an 1150GS, it is a bit of a shock. The GS makes loads of clunks and ticking sounds, but after a while you just get used to it. I expect the more experienced GSer would tell you its a boxer trait....

I agree, I came from a Bandit 1200 and it was smooth and quiet and then the GS1150 with no earplugs.... "what the f*ck have I bought" thoughts when I hear the rattles...... and tinkles from the motor!

Mine's an ein-spark and has still less than 6000m on the clocks....

spooky! just took delivery of 2700 mile 1150 and guess what i was thinking of taking it back for a rattle check

Johnny,
See you found the board then :beerjug: Like Rob Farmer says, it's probably f$£ked mate, best sell it to Jim650 for a reduced rate - it having a faded red saddle an all...............:D

Well if any of you thought you were buying the two wheel equivalent of a Bentley you are all wrong. I´ll lend you all my 1989 R100GS and when youve all stopped pissing yourself laughing you´ll realise you dont have any problem at all.

The only long term solution is to let it go and if that doesn´t work buy a really good quality helmet that fits well and ride faster so you only hear the wind noise.

the bloke who said that the two sparks all do it is absolutely right of course. With such large cylinders having two sparks knocking around at the same time means that sparks tend to bang into each other making that funny noise.......

You oilheads are all great big softees.

Maybe too late but they do all do it I think its the throttle valves. Mine does it best(worst?) as the tension is taken up on the throttle cable just as it comes off tickover. Read something about it in manual ' zero throttle cable play will cause the butterfly valves to rattle' best thing to do is keep the throttle wide open!

Well, just got mine back from its 600 service and guess what?
Tappet noise, (loud) never did it before the service. It does it at tick over, in gear out of gear and it dosnt make any difference when the clutch is opereated..it seems to be comming more from the right hand side of the lump. I was quite appy with it before the service, now its getting on my nerves!

Now this is interesting!

I too, had a nice quite GS prior to the 600 mile service, afterwards the tappet noise was very pronounced - so much so I was worried that the mech hadn't set them correctly.

They should be set from cold (first thing in the morning after leaving the bike overnight) but I had just ridden in some 2 hours prior to them being set, so obviously I was a bit worried.

Once cold, I pulled the covers and very carefully checked all the clearances, they were spot on - the bike still has a loudish tappet noise some 3000 miles on...

Not sure why the noise "suddenly" appeared at 600 miles unless the clearances are set from the factory at some weird setting that makes them stealthy. Anyway, you're not alone.

Regards,
Finbarr.

If you want to check where the noise is coming from use a screwdriver as a stethoscope. Place the blunt end against your ear and the blade against engine cover bolts until you hear the noise that matches the clicking you are worried about. Using this method I found that my engine was fine and that the noise I was hearing was coming from the butterfly valve in the throttle body.

I think that BMW's trade mark is rattly engines. ALL airheads rattle. Some people call it character. I call it loose!
It would seem from reading the above posts that BMW have realised that the oilheads were all a bit antiseptic and too quiet so thay've engineered rattles into the new twin spark engine so that it sounds like a proper BMW.:D  :D  :D
It's great isn't it. No need to "run in" your engine. It's already worn out when you get it.:p :p :p
