There is a rattle on my bike (R1100GS) that is bothering me. I do tend to ignore these things and just get on with riding but I am concerned that something is maybe loose.

Anyway the rattle. It is most noticeable when engine is cold and when you are just moving off. Seems to be from the left hand side.

Any ideas? I can't see any loose allen head bolts or whatnot. :)

That's going to be tricky to diagnose remotely! Obvious candidate would be the throttle body pivot pin - check to see if it's worn. How many miles on the bike?

I sounds like er something is loose! A deep shuddering rattle that goes when the revs rise. The bike has done 89,000 miles and has a patchy history. Ex courier bike, cat d write off. I had a service done about 7 years ago when it had about 83,000 on the clock. Can't remember what was done and have lost the receipt. It was stored for six years and I have just revived it and put another thousand on the clock.

It's giving me so pleasure riding it again. I may save up and go and see the legendary steptoe.

Is this yours?
I found it outside the WC section. :augie

FFS don`t break down on the way and call him! :D

:D :D

Here's a breakdown i had earlier today. Had a phone call, advised what the problem was, bike arrived on a breakdown truck at just after 3pm. Guess what. Breakdown now fixed and ready to go. :D

My 'guess' is the left hand cam chain tensioner. 'Deep and shuddering' rules out stuff like throttle bodies or pinking. The abs makes a 'kerlunk' as you pull away after starting but that comes from under the tank. As posted above, if you're unlucky, it could be crank / big ends.

A good mechanic like Steppers will be able to diagnose it pretty well instantly - I'd pop it round and let him have a look.

Remove bash plate and see if it goes away:beer:

That's a good suggestion in that I did an oil and filter change about a thousand miles ago and I wonder if the bash plate has come loose. (see crap mechanic thread). If not that then off to Steptoe when I have some cash.

It's not the bash plate. The rattle and vibes are increasing. I am struggling to get time to go visit Mr Steptoe. Very worried about my bike. :(

Can you video it and upload it to youtube? (Obviously make the best job of the sound that you can)
