A GSA1150 - A sensible option for a born again biker?

I got a GS 1100 when I returned to riding after a long layoff, It felt a bit lardy when moving around the garage but has been a superb re-introduction to riding, Im glad I missed out on an intermediate bike. If you are not an enormously tall person then the regular GS might be an option worth considering.
Oh and another thing I found worthwhile was attending a Bikesafe course, even though I am a 50,000 miles a year business driver I learned a lot and refreshed some old skills, highly recommended

Thanks for your input. I've pretty much made up my mind - it has to be a GSA1150! I just need to find the right one now!

1150 GSA.......................one of the best BMW's ever made

Solid, quirky and a pleasure to ride

It will be an Icon

I got back on a bike after 25 years, passed my test (I last rode in the days when you could ride a 250cc bike without a full licence) and bought a 1100GS the next day. I put 20,000 miles on the clock in 11 months. Yes, it was big and I dropped it three times while pushing it about :blast but it was just so easy to ride and so comfortable on long journeys. In my opinion, go for the big GS if you want to try it.

Having said that, I am about to buy an 800GS (this Friday :) ). I intend to learn and use off-road skills and think (admittedly based only on my road experience with the 1100 GS) that the larger GS will be too heavy for long distance rough roading with luggage and spare fuel.

Nice one Ross, i bought my 800 last May, 12500 miles and counting
Ive had an 1150 rockster and an 1150RS, the 800 is lighter, more nimble and quicker than both.
The seat isnt as comfy as an 1150GS though but still pretty good.
My take on it is - if you want it, get the 1150GSA, just take a good long test ride on it first.

gsa 1150

Best bike i have ever had
I feel at home riding with the wife on the back.
Plenty of grunt.
Although get used to be ignored by many other motorcyclists when you buy a BMW, They think you are a milllionaire.
I'm not wish i was.
Just been down to Matlock bath for the day.
The bike didn't miss a beat.
Try and get one with all the goodies.
I would say a private sale would be better.
Especially if it's on here because there all good dudes
Best of luck.

My 5 eggs - for whatever that might be worth

As above......

Just do it, youll love it.
Hard work when stood still or moving it round as everyone has said, but once on the move youll be surprised how nimble they are...

When i passed my test i bought a ZZR1100, cos thats what i wanted to end up with. Failing the direct "bite the bullet" approach it was buy one ,,get bored,, buy a bigger one,get bored ,,,, trade in for a bigger one , and eventually get the ZZR.. Cut out the middle man and get on with your riding on whatever you fancy..

It is easier in the long run cos u only have to get the hang of ONE bike..
Granted its a handfull to begin with but you soon get to grips with it .. Coming in to land is a bit of an art , as is slow speed and tight spaces, they just need a bit of planning.. Its not rocket science and you arent a 15 year old with low brain power.. Treat it with respect and youll be where you want to be ,riding what you want to ride,,,, and sooner.....

Just enjoy it ...
