A long way to fall...

20th September 2024 - (continued)

IMG_5721-X4.jpg

I packed all my gear up and made an ill-advised descent of the stairs with all of it. I get to the ground in one piece. This really is a nice place - I may visit again at some stage. I never usually watch TV when travelling, but I had to watch something on the giant TV last night. I watched the latest episode of Slow Horses on Apple TV - a series that is woefully badly written, but I love the characters so much I persist with it. Afterwards, I watched the second episode of Bad Monkey - a crime comedy set in the Florida Keys - good fun.

Son-of-duckling greets me like a puppy - the door mirrors folding out like its ears are standing up, as it yelps its appreciation. I load everything into the boot (trunk) and set off into a bright, but overcast morning.

IMG_5723-X4.jpg

It's not forecast to be quite as warm today, but it's still pleasant. I drive down to the office where I checked in, and asked them where they could recommend for breakfast.

Thus, here I am driving to a restaurant called Bell the Cat, about four miles away...

IMG_5725-X4.jpg

I drive back across the bridge to Belfast.
You know, it does have some aspects in common with the Belfast in the UK: They're both harbours - and neither of them has a shipbuilding industry...
peepwall.gif

IMG_5727-X4.jpg

Bell the Cat is a huge place, fronted by a large parking lot - which is very full
thumb2.gif

IMG_5728-X4.jpg

I'm soon sat down...

IMG_2538-X4.jpg

...and Jayden and Lizzy...

IMG_2543-X4.jpg

...bring me the 'Basic' breakfast (with a side of avocado - as I knew it would wind up my mate Darren) - (Hi Darren
wave.gif
)

IMG_2542-X4.jpg

When Jayden asked what kind of toast I'd like, I said, "Sourdough" - to which she asked "White, wheat wholemeal or multi-grain?". She recommended multi-grain - it was a good choice...
DukeGirl.gif

I smashed the avocado onto the toast and pretended I was a millennial. Tasted great…
lol8.gif

Fully sated, I paid my (very reasonable) $23 inc 20% tip bill and said goodbye. Great restaurant
thumb2.gif

I have been having trouble with Agnes. I keep asking her to take me to Acadia National Park and she keeps telling me there are no available routes. Weird. I put the town of Ellsworth in the search (it's about ten miles from the park) and she's straight on the job.
hmmm.gif

IMG_2545-X4.jpg

How about that for a bridge?
cool_shades.gif

It spans the Penobscot Narrows. The left tower has an observatory at the top, accessible by elevator. I would have taken a trip, if the weather was clearer - perhaps I'll come by another time before I come home...

IMG_5736-X4.jpg

Sheriff's car from another age at the side of the road - can anybody identify it?

IMG_2547-X4.jpg

I stop off in Ellsworth to visit the temple of consumerism that is Wal-Mart...

IMG_2548-X4.jpg

I idly look at the wares on display...

IMG_2553-X4.jpg

It's not even October, but the pumpkin spice has infected the entire store...

IMG_2557-X4.jpg

Halloween is a big celebration in the USA, which means it's big business...

IMG_2558-X4.jpg

...and Wal-Mart wants to grab as much of that business as they can...

IMG_2561-X4.jpg

It's just a bit over the top...
icon10.gif

IMG_2556-X3.jpg

...but if they're having fun - that's fine...

I get one of the items (for folks back home) I'm looking for, but will have to look harder for the other...

IMG_2564-X4.jpg

I notice that the use of self-checkouts has become so ubiquitous that they signpost the ones with staff at them...
bluduh.gif

I pay for my stuff, and was hoping to buy a 'reusable' shopping bag (you get them in Tesco for a pound or so). Nope - the only option is a paper sack - hey ho...

IMG_2550-X3.jpg

eek7.gif

I go back to son-of-duckling, who excitedly greets me and reminds me to fasten my seat belt before setting off. Part of the "moving off" system gives your seatbelt a little tug (to make sure there's no slack, I suppose) then releases and locks the doors. The interlocks and complexity of the electronics on these things must be mind-boggling...

I work out why Agnes can't get me a route to Acadia National Park. There are two of them - and one of them is on an island...
fpalm.gif

I post the correct one into Waze and we're soon heading south towards the accessible one...

IMG_5739-X4.jpg

I find that access to the Peak Road is restricted and that you have to book a slot. I turn around and, having done so, Ranger Donna (horribly out of focus in this shot) compliments me on how quickly I managed to get it done and asks if I'll be in this area again, as the visibility isn't great and it'll be worth revisiting on a clear day if I get the opportunity.

IMG_2568-X4.jpg

There are some great views...

IMG_2572-X4.jpg

When I reach the summit, I understand what Donna meant - this is beautiful, but it would be spectacular on a clear sunny day...

IMG_2576-X4.jpg

I take a last look around...

IMG_2579-X4.jpg

...and then make my way back downhill. I follow the loop road for a few miles, trees are showing signs of turning colour - it has certainly been a noticeable difference the further north I've gone...

IMG_2582-X4.jpg

I get down to Seawater Bay - a lovely spot...

IMG_2585-X4.jpg

I'm listening to Das Boot on Audible...
lol8.gif

I set Agnes the task of taking me to my hotel for tonight - The Comfort Inn at Bangor - and she's straight on the job...

IMG_2588-X4.jpg

I'm staying here two nights - it has a good write-up and, apparently, a great Mexican restaurant next door...
thumb2.gif

IMG_2589-X4.jpg

I decide to do some shopping online. I'm going to replace my ageing iPad with a new one. There's no Apple Store in Bangor, but - by skilful use of Google - I am able to find what I want at Best Buy (for UK readers, Best Buy are a giant electrical and electronics retail warehouse).

It all starts fine - yes, they have a Gen 10 iPad with 256Gb in blue in stock. Would I like to pay online and then collect it? "Yes", I think, "That'll make it easy".

[Morgan Freeman]"But that didn't make it easy, in fact Mike regretted doing this almost immediately"[/Morgan Freeman]

I go through the rigmarole of filling everything in, then click 'Checkout'. How would you like to pay? Let's see - "PayPal" - no - some snag. OK, how about Apple Pay? Nope.

OK - I'll enter my credit card details. Need a USA phone number and address. With the bit between my teeth now, I eventually find that I can enter an address in Delaware as the billing address and that will allow the purchase to go through. It eventually does and my iPad will be ready to pick up within the hour. Good - I could do with some fresh air. I put the address of Best Buy into Agnes to find it's three minutes away...
yelrotflmao.gif

I drive over there and explain what has happened. They tell me they can't release it to me until I have received the email that says it's ready to pick up...
fpalm.gif

Of course, what I could have done, is drive over here an hour ago and just paid for it...

Anyway, whilst I'm waiting to receive my email, I pick out a protective Otter Box case for it and pay for that. Suddenly the email arrives and I'm given the iPad. I ask if they have a plastic carrier (I really need one to tote all the crap I carry in the car about), but - once again - paper sacks are the only answer.

I come back out to the car and drive straight to Las Palapas - the Mexican restaurant right in my hotel's parking lot...

IMG_2592-X4.jpg

Named for a sort of shanty roofed building, which I think in Belize they called an Atap...

palapa-with-synthetic-roof-1.jpg

...it is absolutely packed - with only seating at the bar available. Actually, after my Best Buy ordeal, that's exactly where I want to sit...
lol8.gif

IMG_2601-X4.jpg

That'll do nicely...

I peruse the menu...

IMG_2597-X4.jpg

[/Morgan Freeman]"But he already knew what he was going to order. It was what he always ordered in a new Mexican restaurant" [/Morgan Freeman]

IMG_2599-X4.jpg

Nachos Supremos...
nod.gif

IMG_2603-X4.jpg

They were superb...
DukeGirl.gif

I settle up (a very reasonable $25 inc a 20+% tip), and walk back out to son-of duckling. Now - if it's anything, the X6 is a big car - but look how comically small it looks next to the bro-dozer on the right...

IMG_2604-X4.jpg

I park at the front of the hotel and take my shopping indoors. I have to hand it to Apple, setting up a new phone or iPad is very simple - you effectively just put them next to one another and they get on with it. By far the most complex task was fitting the Otter Box - but I eventually managed that as well...

Within twenty minutes it had adopted the content of my old iPad (which I called Ripley, for some reason). It also adopted this name, so I changed it (as I'll be keeping Ripley) - the new iPad is called Marnie.

IMG_2605-X4.jpg

It feels like it has been quite a long day, so I think - having published this update - I'll have an early-ish night.

Good day
thumb2.gif

IMG_2565-X4.jpg

OMG - who'd buy that?

Was that beer in the glass whilst sat at the bar ?

I'm really glad you seem to be enjoying your new trip, a good number of bridge and old cars photos seem to confirm this.

21st September 2024

Despite my plans to have an early night, it's past midnight when I switch the light out...
fpalm.gif

I sleep well and am awoken by a call from a number in Northern Ireland at 07:45 - probably someone from the Titanic Museum wanting to complain about my ship-building comment...
lol8.gif

I block the number and then get up. I have a great shower, get dressed and then go looking for some breakfast...

IMG_2608-X4.jpg

The corridor outside my room looks like the starting grid of the Indy 500, as the cleaning staff get ready to change the rooms...

IMG_2610-X4.jpg

I walk into the breakfast area and immediately lower the average age...

IMG_2611-X4.jpg

There's an excellent choice...

IMG_2612-X4.jpg

...some of it is almost healthy...

IMG_2613-X4.jpg

The hell with that...

IMG_2609-X4.jpg

I grab cinnamon toast, omelette and sausage (those things that look like burgers) and get stuck in
DukeGirl.gif

IMG_2614-X4.jpg

I glance at the local paper whilst eating - the schoolboy humour in me wishes it was called "Bangor Daily"...
lol8.gif

I go to the front desk and pay for my second night's stay. I've booked via Booking.com (cheaper), which means I have to book any extension through them as well. Experience has taught me not to book a couple of nights without assessing the hotel first. This one's easy, and I need to get my key cards reprogrammed and I'm good to go.

I fill my coffee mug up and pad back to my room. I'm going to have a quiet day in and plan where to go next.

22nd September 2024

I only had a light snack yesterday, bought when I filled son-of-duckling with fuel (at a full-service gas station - it's like being in Oregon). The car is doing 29.4mpg (that's a US gallon - it's doing 35.3mpg per UK gallon) - not bad for a huge four litre SUV...
hmmm.gif

I spent yesterday doing some personal admin and just generally not driving. I always used to plan quite long days when I was riding, as the travelling was the main purpose of the trip. Now on four wheels - especially in a vehicle that does just about everything for you - the driving part is less attractive, so I had a day off.

I sleep well and wake around 07:30. I'm up, abluted and dressed by 08:15, and wheel my stuff out to the car. For the first time this since I arrived, it's a cool morning - much more like the temperatures I was expecting when planning the trip.

I come back in to fill my cup with coffee, but decide against breakfast - nice as it is - as I want to eat on the road.

I'm driving out of the hotel parking lot at 08:30 and heading inland. I'm listening to Operation Chastise, by Max Hastings, an excellent telling of the RAF Dams raid in WWII. I've listened to it before, but have no problem repeating, as it's a great tale, well told.

I've booked a room tonight at the Sugarbush Inn - only a couple of hours away. It was a suggestion by inmate @405sqn on ADVrider, who suggested the fall colours should be getting going there.

I get Agnes to choose a windy route and, after a quick positioning stretch of dual carriageway (divided highway), I spend much of the day on State roads.

IMG_5742-X3.jpg

It's a bright day, with the overcast just breaking. The roads are virtually empty, which makes a pleasant change.

IMG_5745-X4.jpg

Although all the trees are clearly getting into Autumn mode, these wildflowers didn’t get the memo...

IMG_5747-X4.jpg

I drive down miles of almost deserted country roads - the locals are in church or having breakfast, I guess...

IMG_2619-X4.jpg

Isn't that a gorgeous place?

IMG_2620-X4.jpg

...and it has a great barn next door (first barn pic!)...

IMG_2626-X4.jpg

In a paddock on the other side of the road, a white horse is grazing...

IMG_2623-X4.jpg

It's an idyllic spot...

IMG_2624-X4.jpg

In the town of Corinna...

IMG_5751-X4.jpg

...I turn right towards St Albans...

IMG_5754-X4.jpg

A few of the properties have seen better days...

IMG_5755-X4.jpg

This old gent was for sale...

IMG_5758-X4.jpg

Any guesses? How about his stablemates?

IMG_5759-X4.jpg

Points available for make/model/year...

IMG_5761-X5.jpg

Anyway - breakfast! Sunday breakfast is an American institution (one that I am trying to introduce in the UK :D) - and this is why I wanted to miss breakfast at the hotel earlier...

IMG_2629-X4.jpg

The Farmer's Table - this place looks perfect...

IMG_2628-X4.jpg

The large parking lot is pretty full. I step inside and ask for a table for one - they tell me there will be a few minutes wait - another good sign...

IMG_2630-X4.jpg

Inside, it's abuzz with conversations and wait staff bringing food to people...

IMG_2631-X4.jpg

I'm soon seated and the lovely Reneé brings me a menu...

IMG_2637-X4.jpg

...from which I select...

IMG_2632-X4.jpg

The Farmer's Morning - with eggs over-easy and Texas toast (I asked - it's like white toast but thicker)...

IMG_2636-X4.jpg

Well - that should do...
DukeGirl.gif

It was great
thumb2.gif

Great value too - $20 including a good tip...

I stagger out to son-of-duckling, to the sound of my skin stretching, and set back off...

IMG_5774-X4.jpg

It's a very pleasant drive...

IMG_5769-X4.jpg

I spot this lovely old girl...

IMG_5768-X4.jpg

...any ideas?

IMG_5776-X4.jpg

I stop for a few minutes on the splendidly named Katie Crotch Road...

IMG_5781-X4.jpg

Where a pretty stream follows the road for a while.

OK - I admit it - I only stopped to take the pics so that I could weave Katie Crotch Road into the report...
lol8.gif

IMG_5783-X4.jpg

The colours of the leaves are definitely brighter here - higher altitude and more exposed, possibly?

IMG_5785-X4.jpg

It'll be full of colour in a week or two - I know I'm at the start of the 'season'...

IMG_5787-X4.jpg

IMG_5788.jpg

Quite right, Kim - you tell them...

IMG_5789-X4.jpg

The cloud is clearing nicely, and it's turned into a lovely day...

IMG_2639-X4.jpg

That would spoil my whole day...

IMG_5791-X4.jpg

I stop at a rest area at Sarampus Falls...

IMG_5795-X4.jpg

It's a lovely spot, and I enjoy the quiet - broken only by the sounds of the river...

IMG_5797-X4.jpg

I set course for the hotel, and not long afterwards arrive at Sugarbush Inn...

IMG_2644-X4.jpg

When I booked this, I got an email saying that the desk wouldn't be manned, but that my room number was 103, and I could gain access by using the last four numbers of my phone number to activate the digital lock on the door.
OK.
It all worked perfectly until the code didn't unlock the door. I called the number in case of snags and left a voicemail...

IMG_2642-X4.jpg

I finish the NYT Spelling Bee whilst I waited. Chere arrives within 10 minutes or so. She hadn't got my message and had come up to code the door lock (I am a bit early)
icon10.gif

This ski lodge opens off-season to cater to people like me. But, although the room is lovely...

IMG_2643-X4.jpg

...the heating isn't on - although there's an elephant-like air conditioning unit here.

IMG_2645-X4.jpg

Chere is concerned I'll be cold, so she tells me to grab the space heater from behind the front desk if necessary. She gives me a list of local restaurants (one of which I intend to favour with my patronage as soon as this report is complete), four bottles of water and some snacks, plus the use of a coffee maker in the foyer.

I wheel my kit in, connect via their (very fast) Wi-Fi and plug everything in. Looking around the room, I notice there's no chair or table...
bluduh.gif

No matter...

IMG_2647-X4.jpg

Improvise, adapt, overcome...
icon10.gif

Good day :)

22nd September 2024 - (continued)

After posting, I texted Jorge, to let him know I was going out to find somewhere to eat. As I walk out to the car, I notice they have a sort of Japanese-style garden opposite the entrance to the hotel - it's rather pretty...

IMG_2649-X4.jpg

I drove down the hill and had just pulled up here...

IMG_2653-X4.jpg

...to receive a text from Jorge with a link to it...
lol8.gif

IMG_2655-X4.jpg

It's kind of a sports bar type place, but a sign says Sundays are 'Family Days' - although there's no sign of this.

IMG_2660-X4.jpg

I order a pint of Sacred Profane dark lager, from Biddeford Brewery, Maine. I put these details in for @Doc at UKGSer, who needs to know what people in other countries are drinking.

I have a quick look at the menu...

IMG_2664-X4.jpg

...and order Nachos with shredded BBQ beef - delicious...

IMG_2667-X4.jpg

...washed down with a pint of Baxter Staycation lager
DukeGirl.gif

I get to chatting with a local, Paul, who suggests (as did @405Sqn at ADVrider) that US2 west towards Rumford is a beautiful route. Paul suggests I visit Mt Washington, which is the highest peak in New England. He also recommends a motel in the town of Gorham, New Hampshire, called the Town and Country. He says it's a nice place and they have a bar.

I'm booked in there tomorrow night...
lol8.gif

I drive back to the hotel, comfortable in my fleece. As a precaution, I pinch the space heater from the front desk...

Good man.
You're getting into this beer lark.:beerjug: People do like a beer & food picture.
Great trip report by the way. I'm making notes for my next Doc does series. :augie

23rd September 2024

I sleep well, waking initially at about 06:30, when I reached out and switched the heater on again...
lol8.gif

I eventually get up, as the room temperature is much better, and have a great shower. This is an 'Accessible' room (ie Disabled access) and the shower and bathroom are superb.

Feeling a little more human, I dress and pack my kit up. I wheel my bags out to the front desk, where Chere is at work. I told her she was right about the heater...
icon10.gif

I say goodbye and head back down the hill into Carrabassett, deciding to stop when I seem somewhere promising for breakfast. It's a cool, clear day, with a lot of high cumulus clouds, with few gaps. I drive towards New Hampshire - turning onto Route 149 after leaving the Carrabassett Valley.

IMG_5809-X3.jpg

I spot a few old souls resting at the side of the road in Kingfield...

IMG_5808-X4.jpg

That's a pretty old Merc...
hmmm.gif

IMG_5810-X4.jpg

Here's an easy one - particularly if you've seen The Graduate (and for @RubberCow at ADVrider!)...

IMG_5806-X4.jpg

Loads of Detroit steel awaiting its fate behind the building...

IMG_5807-X4.jpg

Any ideas on the red one on the left - is it a Thunderbird?
hmmm.gif

I carry on, driving past the Stanley Museum, as Agnes nags me back onto her route...

IMG_5811-X4.jpg

By way of retaliation, I ask her to look for somewhere to eat, as I've yet to see anywhere open. She mulls this over for a long time, before telling me she can't find anywhere...
fpalm.gif

No matter, I eat one of the 'energy' bars, which were left out for me at the Sugarbush Inn - it covers me with crumbs and leaves no other impression.

IMG_5812-X4.jpg

I head towards US2, along some state roads - the pics don't do it justice, but the colours are starting to appear. It's a pleasant drive...

IMG_5818-X4.jpg

If anything, it seems that clouds are building, although it's warmer than it was up at the hotel...

IMG_5825-X4.jpg

I decide to broach the subject of a café again - Agnes responds with a place on my route about seven miles away...
thumb2.gif

I stop at what is a convenience store and café combined - Ellis Variety and Dine...

IMG_2675-X4.jpg

I take a seat in the (largely empty) café...

IMG_2668-X4.jpg

Where Chrissy (right) - pictured here with friend and colleague Lexy...

IMG_2673-X3.jpg

Tells me that they're done serving breakfast (it's 11:30), and brings me the lunch menu. I get a fill up of my thermal coffee cup and Chrissy, who is clearly under a lot of stress, suddenly opens up to me that she caught her bloke cheating on her last night and she's bloody annoyed about it...
becca.gif

Recognising someone who could do with a sympathetic ear, I order a steak sub and fries and, when it arrives, ask her if she'd like to join me. She says she has lots to do, and I ask if she can do it at the table while we chat?

IMG_2672-L.jpg

She brings me my (excellent)
DukeGirl.gif
lunch, then brings a tray loaded with cutlery over and sits by me while she parcels knives and forks into napkin-wrapped pairs. She describes what has happened and how needless it was. It's a story as old as time - I can only give her the advice, "This too shall pass".

She's been looking for a job in the Florida Keys and is likely to move back there - she was born in Connecticut but has lived in this town (which revels in the unlikely name of "Weld") from when she was 19. She asks about the ride report, and gives me her phone number, so I can send her the link. We compare dog pictures - she has a beautiful black Labrador...
Rabia.gif

She then says there's something she must show me outside. I'm not quite sure what to expect as I follow her...
icon10.gif

IMG_2671.jpg

"Look", she says, "Booby mountains!"
yelrotflmao.gif

I think Chrissy is going to be just fine - it'll take a while, though. I leave her a decent tip, then get back on US2...

IMG_5830-X4.jpg

This is a lovely drive. In a fortnight's time, with a bright sunny day, it'll be spectacular...

IMG_2677-X4.jpg

In the town of Mexico, I'm taken on a bit of a detour, but eventually re-join US2.

Highways in the USA are even-numbered if they go East-West, and odd-numbered if they go North-South. So now you know.

IMG_2680-X4.jpg

The detour has cheated us out of a decent bridge, dammit...
bluduh.gif

IMG_2682-X4.jpg

How about this customised old boy? Clearly a work-in-progress...

IMG_2681-X3.jpg

Rear "suicide doors" - the licence plate suggests it might be a 1939 model - but what make? Any ideas?

IMG_2683-X4.jpg

Not far to go now - I stop for a few minutes at a lay-by...

IMG_2686-X4.jpg

It has turned into a nice day...
thumb2.gif

IMG_2687-X4.jpg

I pitch up at The Town & Country very early, but the desk staff take it in their stride and book me in quickly...

IMG_2688-X4.jpg

Although it is a huge place (150+ rooms), the feel is of a small 'mom & pop'. The room is clean and well maintained, the Wi-Fi is fast, and the bar will be open at 17:00...
cool_shades.gif

Chrissy - if you get around to reading this - I hope things are getting better for you...:)
