23rd September 2024 - (continued)

After posting today's journal, I wandered over to the main entrance, where I checked in, made my way up the stairs to a mezzanine level, and found the bar...
thumb2.gif

IMG_2689-X4.jpg

I have a frosted glass of Bud Light - the only non-IPA they had on draft...

IMG_2690-X4.jpg

...then had a salad. In the USA, they serve a salad as a starter, which can be confusing if you're not aware of this. I get into conversation with Mike, a retired paper engineer, who lives in Northern Maine (four blocks from Canada
icon10.gif
), and has to travel down to New York state three times a year for medical procedures. Him and his wife always stay here - he tells me the breakfast is top-notch...
clap.gif

We chat about this and that, and my main course arrives...

IMG_2691-X4.jpg

New England Chicken with pan-fried potatoes, cranberry stuffing and baked cauliflower...
DukeGirl.gif

I order another Bud Light. The mood in the bar is quiet, but convivial, with everyone in good humour (or humor, depending on where you're from, I suppose
icon10.gif
). It would be very easy to have a couple more, but I don't want a sore head in the morning, so I say my goodbyes, settle my bill and make my way back to my room.

I may head for Mt Washington tomorrow - time to look at a map and find somewhere to stay...
hmmm.gif

Great trip, nice to talk with Chrissy who will come out the other side and maybe sign up on here as our foreign correspondent.

24th September 2024

I sleep well and wake at around 07:00. I get up and look out of the window - the hillside opposite is swathed in cloud. Poo. I wanted to drive to the top of Mt Washington today, but there seems little point if it's socked in...
bluduh.gif

No matter - I have a shower, dress and pack, then drive son-of-duckling around to the main entrance to get some breakfast. I'm pleased to see that the cloud is already clearing...

IMG_5834-X4.jpg

The restaurant area is huge - but not especially busy...

IMG_2694-X4.jpg

Nancy...

IMG_2697-X4.jpg

...(who loves my accent), brings me a menu and fills my thermal mug with coffee...
thumb2.gif

IMG_2695-X4.jpg

Hmmm - what to order...

IMG_2696-X4.jpg

The Double-Up seems like the thing...

IMG_2699-X4.jpg

It does not disappoint...
DukeGirl.gif

Eventually, I finish, and walk back out to the car, to the sound of my arteries hardening. The weather seems to be improving steadily, so I get Agnes to put a stop at Mt Washington in the route she's worked out for me today...

IMG_5838-X3.jpg

I steer along Agnes's route, passing several signs warning of wildlife crossing...

IMG_5855-X3.jpg

Arriving at the base of Mount Washington (did I mention it is the highest peak in New England?), there are a few indications that this might not be for everyone...

I ask the chap collecting the ($46
eek7.gif
) entrance fee whether the summit is in cloud - he says it's above cloud, so I'll drive through a layer on the way up...

IMG_5841-X4.jpg

It's an easy drive on an excellent road surface - the temperature dropping as I climb...

IMG_5842-X4.jpg

As you might expect, the lower temperatures at the higher altitude have accelerated the fall colours of the trees...

IMG_5851-X4.jpg

I enter cloud with about 2.4 miles to run - it's not particularly thick, and it's not long before I start getting glimpses of blue sky above...

IMG_5852-X4.jpg

...and then suddenly I emerge into brilliant sunshine - reminds me of when I was a private pilot...
cool_shades.gif

IMG_2701-X4.jpg

You can see for miles - but bloody hell it's cold...
78326985-Ti.gif
I zip my fleece right up...

IMG_2706-X4.jpg

The weather station at the summit is famous for recording the world's fastest wind speed (231mph) in 1936 - a record held until 1996 (this is for non-tornadic winds - those things are nuts)...

IMG_2710-X4.jpg

I'm a mile high here, and the temperature doesn't encourage me to spend much time out of the car - which I suddenly develop more affection for...
lol8.gif

IMG_2711-X4.jpg

I put son-of-duckling in gear, using the flappy paddle things for the first time to lock into D2, to allow me to use the engine to assist braking on the way back down...

IMG_2721-X3.jpg

I gently make my way down - pop into the gift shop to buy a couple of bits, and then re-join US2...

IMG_5865-X4.jpg

I spot this immaculate old gent...

IMG_5863-X4.jpg

Isn't that beautiful?

IMG_5861-X4.jpg

Slightly sadder looking old boy, advertising an Inn, further on...

IMG_5870-X4.jpg

My route today will take me through Vermont and into New York state - I'm keeping north to try to get the best colours.
Truth be told, I'm already considering another trip next year, targeting the middle two weeks of October...

IMG_5873-X4.jpg

I enter Vermont at about 11:20 - the speed limit reduces from 70 to 65...

IMG_5876-X4.jpg

It's warming up nicely - 19C at the moment - I switch the ac on...

IMG_5878-X4.jpg

I pull over for a pee break and to fill up. For those that are interested, over the past 362 miles, son-of-duckling has done 31.3 miles per US gallon (a quite impressive 37.6 miles per UK gallon)...
thumb2.gif

IMG_5884-X4.jpg

I'm stuck in some traffic as I exit US2 - so here's a crappy bridge pic...
icon10.gif

IMG_2722-X4.jpg

Out of town again, I'm struck yet again with how simple and beautiful the landscape here is...

IMG_2725-X4.jpg

I am put on the Interstate for a few miles - even the bridges are unremarkable...

IMG_5888-X4.jpg

Then I'm directed to some lovely state roads...

IMG_5889-X4.jpg

I stop on the causeway over Lake Champlain

IMG_2733-X4.jpg

...looking just great in the sunshine...

IMG_2729-X4.jpg

It's just gone 14:00, and I could do with a stop. And some lunch...

IMG_2736-X4.jpg

Seb's burger bar looks good...

I place my order, and they give me a small anti-personnel mine, which will activate when my food's ready...

IMG_2737.jpg

The system works, and I'm brought a very tasty cheeseburger and fries...
DukeGirl.gif

IMG_2741-X4.jpg

Hmm - sounds intriguing...

IMG_5895-X4.jpg

Another time, perhaps...

Agnes continues to steer me west, towards New York, then does something a little unexpected...

IMG_5899.jpg

Seems I'm catching a ferry...
lol8.gif

IMG_5900-X4.jpg

Bridget sells me a ticket for about $12. The ferry is boarding now, so I just follow everyone in Lane One and drive aboard...

IMG_5902-X4.jpg

Great Licence Plate...
icon10.gif

IMG_2748-X4.jpg

I nose up to the car in front, until the ferryman gives me the thumbs up, then set the parking brake, put the car in Park, and switch the engine off. It then asks me to confirm that the parking brake is set and that the vehicle is in Park. Weird. I press Yes and start looking around...

IMG_2749-X4.jpg

Three ferries are doing this shuttle run by the look of it. As soon as we leave the dock one of them comes into view...

IMG_2751-X4.jpg

Something makes me glance at the display. It's completely black. I've never seen it do this before. I put my foot on the brake and press the starter - nothing...
eek7.gif

A faint message on the main display states "Loading software update 21%". It's very slowly increasing... Dammit - what if it hasn't completed by the time we dock (which can't be more than 10 minutes)? I'm utterly stuck - in Park with the parking brake set and with no way to change that...

IMG_2755-X4.jpg

The third ferry passes us, and I can feel the change in the note of the engines as we start to slow to manoeuvring speed. The update is on 73%...

We dock, and everything to my right (or, more properly, starboard) is waved off first. When the car in front of me moves off, the update says 100%, but it still needs to reboot. I explain the situation to the ferryman and - with impeccable timing - everything comes back to life...
fpalm.gif

I start up and drive off the ferry - stopping to check everything once I've cleared the disembarkation lane. Apparently, it had downloaded a new software version, and I somehow agreed to install it.

IMG_2757-X4.jpg

I drive the few miles to the Days Inn in Plattsburgh and check in. My room is great...

IMG_2759-X3.jpg

...and - crucially - the guest laundry is just across the corridor. I get a roll of quarters ($10) at reception and empty the plastic bags of toxic waste that is my laundry into the machine.

Thank goodness the laundry was working - I would be going underwear-critical in a couple of days otherwise...
patch.gif

I hope that the update doesn;t screw the car up My work hire car did an Update But it was polite enough to Ask Was it suitable to update the software at this time

Low speed running and gearchanges have been harsh I am actually REALLY looking forward to handing the bloody thing back and getting my own company vehicle Susupension is like a breeze block on roller bearings :(

AnyHoo AS I believe they say over there

Thanks for your reports @MikeO It makes for an easy and interesting read before hitting the road to my first job

AS an Observation there are more fries and beers in this years report!! :)

stupid beemer needs showing the nearest wreckers yard ffs

nice focus wagon in the buick pic (buick )

seeing as you didnt head further north at champlain

maybe park it in lake ontario if you go that way :D

I can't believe they don't offer fried bread over there? I reckon you could make a killing (pun intended) by introducing it to these restaurant's breakfast menus, charging a small royalty on all portions served.

Is the homemade toast like anybody' toast toasted at home, or is it toasted homemade bread?

You would think it would update the software after you had vacated the vehicle, only doing so after the driver's door had been opened and closed, locked for certain time and the seat unladen? If it hadn't completed it before the door was then unlocked it could cancel the upload?

Keep it coming Mike.

25th September 2024

A good night's sleep. I woke at 05:00 needing a pee, looked at my phone, closed my eyes and suddenly it was 08:05...
icon10.gif

I'm packed, having folded away my newly laundered clothes into the big bag yesterday evening. The big bag contains stuff I won't generally need daily; the small bag is my 'ready-use' stuff (MacBook, iPad, cables, wash kit, etc). I bring both bags in for security but can generally get away with only unpacking one.

I ablute, dress and then look out of the window...

IMG_2760-X3.jpg

Well, there's no need for that, is there?
bluduh.gif

I suppose it had to happen - the first rain since I arrived a week ago...
icon10.gif

I roll my possessions out to son-of-duckling, then repair inside in search of breakfast...

IMG_2762-X4.jpg

...trying not to get distracted on the way...

IMG_2763-X4.jpg

It's a modest setup, but it has the basics. I fill my mug with coffee and choose...

IMG_2765-X4.jpg

...bacon and scrambled eggs - with a bagel (I'm in New York, after all)...
DukeGirl.gif

I drop my key cards at the front desk, then steer the car roughly SSW towards Syracuse, my destination for today...

IMG_5913-X4.jpg

The roads are quiet, and I make good time with the cruise control set to 65 and Stuff You Should Know on the stereo...

IMG_5916-X4.jpg

The rain is intermittent. I have the wipers set to "Auto", and, like every car I have driven with this feature, they don't sweep the screen as often as I'd like (my Škoda is the same), so I control them manually.

Like a savage.

IMG_2767-X4.jpg

Agnes has warned me that I will be incurring a $1.95 toll during today's journey. Of course, it's collected electronically or by 'phone. I paid about $3 per day for this gizmo that is stuck on the screen. I swing it open - it'll pay the toll, and SIXT will pick up the tab. Failing to do this will incur an admin charge of $15 per toll...

IMG_5919-X4.jpg

The colours here are a lot better than they were in Maine...
cool_shades.gif

IMG_5925-X4.jpg

I get turned off the dual carriageway and onto state roads, and the colours get even better...

IMG_5922-X4.jpg

Ooh - a bridge!
icon10.gif

IMG_5940-X4.jpg

On a nice, dry day, this would be a great route to ride on a bike. Not today in this greasy, misty rain, though - I bet these chaps aren't enjoying it much...

IMG_2768-X3.jpg

In the middle of nowhere, I spot a collection of old cars. I have to drive half a mile or so before finding somewhere to turn around. The chap whose house it is is just going inside as I pull up opposite.

I asked him if he would mind if I took some pics of the cars, and he said, "You looking at buying?" I tell him I just want to include them in my journal, and he grunts, "Alright - don't be too long, I'm going out..."

He may not be much of a conversationalist, but he has a fine collection of cars here...

IMG_2769-X4.jpg

...in great condition (especially since they seem to be living outdoors)...

IMG_2770-X4.jpg

They have the look of vehicles that are used fairly regularly, which is nice...

IMG_2774-X4.jpg

...and are quite an eclectic mix...

IMG_2775-X4.jpg

...although he clearly has a weakness for estates (station wagons)...

IMG_2771-X4.jpg

I like this one very much...

IMG_2776-X4.jpg

Look at the design of the front bumper...

IMG_2772-X5.jpg

Split tailgate...
thumb2.gif

IMG_2778-X5.jpg

More treasures lurk nearby - that GTO would be a great project...

IMG_2779-X4.jpg

Other stuff hidden away - I don't want to overstay my effusive welcome, though...

IMG_2781-X5.jpg

Back on the road for a bit, I decide I need a pee stop, so decide to have lunch, in the town rejoicing in the unlikely name of Speculator...

IMG_2783-X4.jpg

So, my criteria for selecting a restaurant are to ignore its appearance but look for a full car park. I pull into the only free slot.

IMG_2785.jpg

There are three other cars here...
lol8.gif

IMG_2788-X4.jpg

I sit at the counter - it's a rough and ready sort of place, but the staff are great. Friendly and helpful. I chose unsweetened tea (they didn't have any lemonade), then immediately put some sugar in it, as I felt they'd taken the 'unsweetened' part of the description to the edge of the void...
eek7.gif

IMG_2789-X4.jpg

...and a Reuben, with sweet potato fries...
DukeGirl.gif

It was delicious...

IMG_2790-X4.jpg

Only a few miles down the road, I pull onto the forecourt of a tyre fitting place - distracted once again by old vehicles...

IMG_2792.jpg

Someone has put a great deal of effort into making this look superb...

IMG_2793.jpg

...which makes their choice of colour a bit of a mystery...
lol8.gif

IMG_2794.jpg

Any ideas on any of the cars so far? Make/model/year?

IMG_2796-X4.jpg

What about this one then?

IMG_2797-X4.jpg

I mean, it's rusty now, but if it were restored...

IMG_2800-X4.jpg

...it would just be ugly.

What is it? A Packard, clearly, but my goodness they must have sneaked them out of the manufacturing plant under cover of darkness...
eek7.gif

IMG_2803-X4.jpg

That's a bit better...
icon10.gif

IMG_2806-X4.jpg

Now we're talking...
Rabia.gif

IMG_2809-X4.jpg

Once again - great attention to detail. I believe this dash-mounted gizmo allows you to drive with full beam on at night, it then auto-dips your headlights if it sees headlights coming in the other direction. Sixty-year-old tech!*
thumb2.gif

I'm directed towards I95 South - my toll gadget gets all excited (I expect - it doesn't give any indication), as we drive under the auto-toll readers...

IMG_5952-X5.jpg

...and, after a swift transit on I95, I'm directed to the Hampton Inn at Syracuse, where I am welcomed by the lady at the front desk and by my TV...

IMG_2814-X3.jpg

My room (as usual with Hampton Inns) is great...

IMG_2813-X3.jpg

I extend my stay for a further night, then go out in search of something to drink. I'm actually after a soft drink - which I get, but I also got waylaid by a six-pack of these...

IMG_2818-X4.jpg

I fill son-of-duckling up and do the MPG figures.

Again - almost identical to yesterday - 31.28mpg (US); 37.57mpg (UK).

I like the name of the cannabis dealer on this billboard…

IMG_2811.jpg

You need to go into the projects at some point....I did that In Memphis, it was epic!
Don`t get shot though and you need to have another car to do so, that BM would be such a target, in every sense of the word!

So, I kept on pressing 'Yes' to shut it up - I probably agreed to it happening, I was just after a quiet life and the opportunity to enjoy the short ferry trip. As it was, I spent the trip stressed to the eyeballs about what would happen if it didn't sort itself out by the time we docked
lol8.gif

The only weirdness with it so far is that the next time I tried to start it, it didn't recognise the key. It then instructed me to hold the back of the key against the steering columd for ten seconds (I suppose reprogramming the car to link it - I have to go through some palaver when changing the battery on my keyfob in my [2006] Audi), after which it worked as normal. A minor change (and annoyance), is that every time I move off it sounds a chime and says 'Speed change' - or something like that. It also does this when the speed limit changes. I don't mind the latter, but the former is getting right on my thruppennies...
bluduh.gif

As for fried bread - the 'Texas Toast' I had at the Farmer's Cafe the other day had clearly been 'toasted' on the hotplate. But you're right - a fried slice would be a welcome addiiton.

Toast is rarely anything other than sliced whatever variety you choose - the choice varies from place to place. Historically I've always favoured sourdough, but that's not been available much in New England.

IMG_2799-X4.jpg

OK - I think it's a 1949 Packard Super 8 (although the pic is of a four-door). But it clearly has some kind of body kit to increase the streamlining. Would it be able to steer with those plates over the front wheels?

@MikeO Try pressing and holding the "Set" button once on the move It works on my work car

It will cancel the bonging when you exceed the speed limit

But will bong once when a limit changes

Its the lane deviation schit that I HATE!! Yesterday on the Motorway it encountered some banding and took control of the wheel off me to steer around it ! Now switched off shortly after moving off !!

26th September 2024

Absolutely pissing down...
bluduh.gif

I ablute and dress, then go down to the breakfast area...

IMG_2820-X3.jpg

That'll keep me going...
DukeGirl.gif

Sated, I walk over to the desk to get my key card updated to reflect my one-night extension. They can't find my booking...
patch.gif

They re-check the message I have on my phone. Baskets of fuck!
becca.gif
I've reserved (and paid for) a room at the Hampton Inn at the airport...
bluduh.gif

I go back up to my room and rebook tonight here - then write a snivelling email to Booking.com and the Hampton Inn at the airport asking if they can waive the cancellation fee (the entire room cost)...
baldy.gif

I decide to have a lazy day. There's no point driving through scenery if the weather stops you from seeing it - plus I can get some personal admin dealt with, and plan where to head next...

had exactly this today

wasnt raining in south wales as i started out

within 10 mins hammering it down

didnt stop raining till i got to blandford

sun came out as im walking from the car (glad i took the car now after the last coupla days)
