A Massive Tank Slapper......

Probably true as I haven't heard of any tank slappers on any bikes as of yet.

In the light of the lack of evidence and a witheld report from BMW, on a legal technicality and the subsequent inclusion of a steering damper on all the 2014MY GS and GSA bikes

One might draw another train of thought:D

BMW have stated the reason that they fitted a steering damper to the 2014 models.

The have stated a reason, granted

Which reason it is, we may either believe or disbelieve

Incorrect, they have stated THE reason that they did it - whether or not you believe it is another matter.

Peter Perfect, probe your mind for a while

BMW have stated a reason, based on production streamlining

Whether it's the real reason :)

I'll say it again, for the hard of thinking

Why fit a component if it serves no purpose ?

Why redesign the front Telelever components to add a steering damper mounting for no reason ?

Why add extra weight & complexity for no purpose ?

So my friend, think outside the box if you can for a moment

Your 'thinking outside the box' is simple cynicism with no evidence. BMW said that they fitted the steering damper because when the bike was fully loaded with panniers and pillion that some people thought the front end felt a bit light - or words to that effect.

The one alleged unexplained 'tank-slapper' in the numpty UK bike press was a solo ridden bike without luggage or a pillion -so any connection between the two things is just pure invention in your head with no evidence or technical justification whatsoever.

P.S. I have ridden more than 1,000 miles a month on my basic LC (no modes, dynamic suspension) since last March - I have not had a single unstable moment be it fully loaded two up or solo without luggage - in fact with the rear pre-load and damping at max the LC feels more stable two-up with a full load of luggage than either of my previous two 1200s.

I have significant real world experience of the LC, how may miles have you ridden an LC?

Sir you are talking bollix - you need to get out a bit more :D

I give up:blast................ perfect by name and perfect by nature

You sir, are an A grade numpty :D

As you're so hard of thinking ...............BMW wouldn't add one, unless there was a technical reason over a number of different situations, not just 2up with luggage

It adds cost/complexity and weight, so they didn't wake up one morning and think, oh we'll add a steering damper because we fancy it and it looks glitzy:blast

If it is so easy to induce through normal everyday riding that a damper is required (as we all know, a bike mag tried various tests to induce one and only managed a small wobble by really arsing about), I'm fairly certain there would be one or two verifiable reports in the media by now

There is critical thinking based on evidence and pure fantasy of those without the experience or technical knowledge.

Exactly :) I am glad someone on here can analyse the evidence and think clearly as opposed to the conspiracy theorists, who have no real experience of the bike - however those types do add a little cheap entertainment to the forum, which can be fun for a few seconds at times :D

By their actions of inclusion, the BMW technical bods seem to think their critical thinking is based on research and evidence:D

Perhaps it's time to bring in Bart Sibrel to get to the bottom of it all? ;)

I'll let BMW answer that one and by their actions of inclusion, the BMW technical bods seem to think their critical thinking is based on research and evidence:D

I'm with JB on this one and you don't need to be a WC owner to understand basic manufacturing/cost analysis principles. Its got nothing to do with individual owners and their own experiences who can only see within their own little bubble. BMW will be looking at the big picture, will have all available information at their disposal, which individuals will not have and will make decisions based upon that. They will scrimp and save on manufacturing costs wherever they can as all manufacturers do, often this is just saving pennies on bolts & nuts etc etc., so to add in an extra manufacturing cost which will be a significant hit on their margins will not be done lightly and without reason.

I have seen many posts on here about the dubious build quality of the LC particularly relating to steering head geometry out of line and subframes needing washers to re align them so paniers will fit etc etc
Now is it possible that the tank slappers relate to these issues and only then when you add in the variable of the riding style ?

I agree with JB that thecost of fitting a steering damper just for the fun of it doesn' sit too well with the penny pinching motor industry in general and the tutonic BMW lads in particular.

May be it is cheaper and easier for them to fit the damper to hide the riding characteristics of a mis aligned bike than it is to build the bike properly in the first place

But you have left out the most important bit marketing - if they think that people will feel happier with a damper then they will add one.

Every new GS has had 'dubious build quality' including the 1150's failing gearboxes, rear wheel bearings, poor fuel injection, corrosion issues etc whether real or imagined - it is the nature of internet forums to make mountains out of mole hills, mostly without any real statistical evidence. If you were to believe all this crap then you'd never buy anything.
