No, don’t use it

You need to get a lithium compatible charger

The BMW Charger Plus (black one) works great through the Can Bus,

Some folks have had trouble with Optimate Lithium chargers through the Can Bus, have a search on the forum

ok mate many thanks for the info

I’m one of those. Either use the BMW lithium charger thru the socket or the lithium optimate connected to the battery only.

I used the socket supplied with the optimate and fried my battery. Bit pissed that NN recommends the Optimate and supplies the lead that f*s up the battery.

Im using the wunderlich branded optimate (4?) on mine charging thru the socket rh side of the dash

It is the lithium switchable model.

Nippy normans £74 quid

i have just ordered the bmw black one via the dealer.i didnt even ask the price.either way i need one

I collected my 1300 March last year and rode it home, stuck on the Optimate 4 from Nn thru the socket. Next time I went to start it it was totally dead and couldn’t be brought to life at all. Got it recovered to dealer.

They ran diagnostics and sent details to BMW who knew there was an issue using other chargers thru the socket whereby it gets ‘confused’ and the battery fully discharges itself. They gave me a BMW charger foc for the inconvenience.

So your recommended (albeit it’s your choice!) to use the bmw charger thru the socket or use an Optimate thru the supplied harness direct to battery. I’m just reporting my experience.

Thanks Barry, nothing I suppose to say it wasn't subsequently fixed by a software update as Ive had at least one s/w update, by harness I assume you mean the crocodile clips.

You should have this in the box which fits directly to the battery terminals then let it hand out somewhere discreetly and you can simply plug in as you need. I had this on my 1250IMG_3703.jpeg

I asked Optimate a couple of weeks ago whether the Quad was suitable for an R1300GS with a lithium battery, charging via the DIN socket, they replied saying it was…

“Hi Paul,

The OptiMate 4 Quad has been designed for use with the new 1300GS and the lithium battery that it is supplied with.

If you buy the Premium version, it will have the DIN lead so you can charge via the accessory socket on the bike.”

Get that. Nn recommend too but it hurt my bike.

If anyone needs a battery to din cable or din to croc clips cable let me know.

I have spares gathering dust.

I’ve just bought a noco genius 5 from Halfords, it has a lithium setting and I’ve fitted the pigtale direct to the battery, I’ve had it charging in the garage for three weeks now and all seems fine, I do feel the side of the battery just in case it’s hot every now and again.

Gave my white BMW charger away with my bike, (R1200) Father Xmas bought me a black BMW charger (R1300GSA) for baby jesus's birthday (y)
