a9 speed cameras

Will be heading up to the far north of Scotland next week and want to get there as quickly as possible. Can anyone give me the heads up on speed camera locations. Also do the average speed cameras take picture from front or rear. I know the a77 camera's take pic from front only. Cheers

There are quite a few fixed ones, the mobile ones are usually out and about as well, can assume one between Perth and Inverness somewhere. Plus unmarked cars. Not a road for going too fast on I'm afraid if you value your licence. Average ones not in yet

You are not wrong there Mika but getting a ticket for speeding is the least of it. Avoiding the tourists who turn the wrong way onto the wrong side of the road, the nutters who make insane overtakes, the tractors that share the main trunk road etc. all trying to terminate your life, that is the real worry. A very dangerous route to travel, keep your eyes peeled and expect the worst of everyone and you'll find that you've judged it about right.

The average speed cameras on the the A9 are not yet operational. Most fixed cameras are rear facing, and as said before road is generally patroled by unmarked police cars.

Just a heads up gents. Average speed cameras are being installed right now on the A9 from just south of Pitlochry all the way to Inverness. You may only see the small works on the verge at the moment but 29 cameras going up!!

The real answer is to ban all lorries from 7am-9pm, get all the nappies veg etc on the rail, and make it a dualler now instead of pissing about for the next ten years.

I only ever cross the A9 on a bike.
Anything else would be a waste of time and rubber.
Fair dos if you really need to burn up miles but A9 is bit like being on a motorway, again something I avoid when on a bike.

But needs must and aw that.
Cameras and unmarked vehicles are aplenty on this road.

Only one action required Gerry, Spend all the money on rebuilding a railway network as we previously had. Look at the East of Fife originally a spiders web of rail lines, ok single track but so what. All heavy goods got very close to the delivery point saving the road system from continual destruction not to mention road safety too.
Even the wear and tear from buses could be almost eliminated.
Bring back the railways.
Lorries will then reduce in numbers and size.

Totally agree ban the lorries between 7am and 9pm thats the simple solution.

God knows what tard thought the average cameras was a good idea, have they ever managed to average 60mph on the A9 between Perth and say Dalwhinnie if your lucky you might manage around an average of 50mph in the cage...

The A9 is an abominable road, living up in Cromarty, we really have no other option if going down south as it takes us 3 hours just to get to Edinburger. I tend to go at 70mph where possible as you won't get pulled at that speed.

Fixed speed cameras are somewhere about Blair Athol but none north of there, there are only 2 or 3 on the whole journey to Perth.

Getting goods close to the delivery point is no use. They need to get to the delivery point and therein lies the problem with rail. It needs road transport at either end of the journey. It also needs an organisation geared up to deal with the needs of the customer ie. depots open to receive goods when it suits the customer and open to allow pick up of goods when the customer needs access. The cost of servicing the network of branch lines you speak about to that level of service would be prohibitive and the extra administration for customers would be unacceptable in an era where businesses operate on the "just in time" principal and expect logistics to respond to their requirements. The thought of having a link in the supply chain subject to the vagaries of the likes of network rail and the RMT union would put most businesses off.

But on the plus side, once you get North of the Dornoch bridge it becomes a cracking road.

But, yup, South of Inverness is a deceptive road. Be very, very careful - especially with twats overtaking from 8 cars back with no indication or mirror checks. They'll get you if you're trying to do the same.......
