Whats it like as a city for bars and restaurants?

My latest job will mean I'll be spending quite a bit of time up there later on this year

Pubs - much the same as in other cities, but there seems to be rather a lot of agro when the pubs pour out.

Restaurants - I usually go for a curry, and The Jewel In The Crown (in Crown St) is the best Indian I've ever been to (been going for around 16 years)..... in the World

you'll do ok for a curry as there's a few decent resturants in town,a couple of decent chinese ones as well

For eating...Silver Darling at the Harbour is top class but pricey. Simpsons, No1 and the Olive Tree also good and more affordable. Bistro Verde or La Lombarda for Italian. Top class curry already mentioned.

Pubs........Bells, The Grill, The Northern, Butchers Arms, The Moorings and the Glentanar Bar are all decent pubs (or used to be).

I had a few days up there last year, it's definitely not the cheapest of places to eat out, or get taxis.

Yir right....the taxi prices and driver attitudes are about the worst in the world.

Plenty places to eat and get a pint but which end of town are you going to be working in, main industrial areas are either north or south of town - and you stay appropriately
And if to the south then Stonehaven is one idea - stay, eat and drink down at the harbour, can do a lot worse (search for the Marine and the Ship), its a grand spot on a summer evening
And are you up and down the road or around weekends? If for long enough and worth bringing it up I could always find a wee spot in the garage for yer bike for weekends

I'll be home every weekend, thanks for the offer for bike storage, it's something I hadn't thought about.

Aberdeen is very cosmopolitan, Its got some really good quality and reasonable restaurants and pubs. Its generally clean and safe at night and its on the edge of some of the best biking roads in the country. I would agree with NJ's suggestion above. Stay in Stonehaven and I know that the Ship Inn on the harbour lets rooms. The owner is a guy called Simon, a good guy, give him a call and negotiate a long term arrangement. The pub is very good and the Marine (which I don't think does rooms) is an even better pub, 30 yards up the road. Food in the marine is excellent, in the bar or the upstairs restaurant. The Ship's food is also very good. Summer nights sitting on the harbour wall with a pint or six is a favourite pastime of mine

And the worst fucking drivers in the country outside London....rush hour is a nightmare.

I remember the Grill didn't even have a wummins toilet, they used to have to cross over the back lane to the old Star & Garter...long time ago now

Best curry house in my opinion is still the Shabbaz on Chapel St. But the modern Blue Moon is also very good

Picking up on Jazbees' mention of accommodation: get your booking of digs done as early as you can. Aberdeen has a severe lack of accom. To the point where if there are a lot of people in town for conferences you will not get anywhere at the last minute.

Last time I was there I had to stay in a pub south of Stonehaven because there literally wasn't a room to be had in Aberdeen or even Stonehaven itself. And I ain't joking, either.

Commerce Street is down by the Harbour....fine during the day but a hooker and spiv hang out at night. The Moorings yir closest pub.

Staying in Stoney is fine but it's hell of a drag getting from there to commerce street. I'll try and find out some decent B&B around that area if you want?

There are loads of pubs and bars in Aberdeen and loads of places to eat too. Al's spot on with the Jewel in the Crown and the Shabbaz is also excellent.

I recon you would like the Dutch Mill which does rooms and has a very full bar downstairs with lots of regulars rather than just the Oil crowd. Half of Aberdeen lives on expense accounts and as a result things are expensive from Taxis to lodgings. You'll need to bring your Grey filter glasses when you come because it is awfully grey....
