resets easy enough but faults as soon as i set off, just had the bike in rgm at croston and apparently its a hydro/piston fault. read all the links and will try bleeding this weekend. pity bmw don't do recalls like toyota

2001 1150 gs 42000 miles with brembo brakes, goodridge hoses fitted 2 years ago, bled them this weekend and felt confident as fluid was a bit dirty and front lever felt much firmer, did reset, no problem, set off, bit of a clunk, but alternating flashing lights again. new odyssey battery fitted after original gave up, but this was after problem started and before service and fault code reading.
seriously thinking of taking top caps under bleed nipples off to have a look inside nothing to lose if a new unit is £1400 apart from this bike running better than ever, but prefer to have abs working, never know when you might need it, certainly saved me from a crash in my car in the past.

My 02 GS had the alternating light issue last week. It took me a whole day of thinking at work to realise the muffs I'd just fitted were pressing down on the ABS button when the ignition was turned on. That turns off the ABS and it lets you know by blinking those lights.

So, got any muffs or anything else pressing your button?

no, and checked front lever is properly forward, which has been a problem listed by others. do have a worry over the rear sensor as it has been scuffed by something, presumably a stone, but it has always been like that, and i assume if this was the problem it would have shown on diagnostic

Hi Chris,
Checked the sensor gap? Was the sensor removed and was a shim not put back?

My GS has 4 shims between the sensor and the final drive, my RT has none so they vary. Your toolkit should have an ABS sensor feeler guage.

That said, if the gap is not correct I'm not sure what sort of warning you get on the dash.

Front lever problem is irelevent on your year of bike, that problem is for the later servo models.

You've had a diagnostic check and it flagged a hydro/piston fault, why are you still looking for a problem elsewhere ??

Fit a second hand unit, available for less than £200.

I generated this fault once on my 1100GS and taped over the lights for 6 months until I admitted to myself that I had caused a problem, took it to BMW and they said it was a unit failure. So then they re-coded the unit with the frame number I think and re-set it and it has worked faultlessly ever since. This was not a simple clear the fault thing but some kind of software update.

£200 sounds affordable motor works quote about 350 but don't have any, do you? or can you recommend anyone, how much would fitting cost, can't imagine its a diy job. out of interest what usually fails to give a hydro/piston fault? i am always more suspicious of electronics than mechanical, probably my age, but also past experiences on cars and vans
