How do you permanently disable the ABS....

Has anyone found that under heavy breaking, you are all under control giving the lever the correct amount of squeeze for slowing up, wether that's pulling up behind traffic or in a bend...you hit a small bump, then it's like the breaks fail and and you suddenly have to grab them hard and it's like they don't work at all.....anyone esle had this, I disabled the ABS and went back and hit the breaks over speed bumps (to test)....no probs, plenty of feel etc.

It's happened a few times as i am bearing down on slow moving traffic.....throws your judgement and timing right out....blind panic sets in as you pull everything.

it's going to catch me out one day.

Yes i know the feel you mean, if you hit a rut or bump as your approaching a junction the abs kicks in and you think that you will end up going across the line into the oncoming traffic.......it can be a little scary.

A have felt the same with cars also, in most cases ABS is a great help , in the case you describe its a hinderance:confused:

John, there was a mention of this turning the abs off perminantly in a thread on the 800 section but i'll be buggered if i can find it. It went something like keep the abs button pressed down when you turn on the ignition or when you start it up:nenau

you got them adv-spec bars on yet?

I've had a couple of occasions where the ABS goes a bit wonky and seems to fill the system .. hard to explain, but lever travel disappears, the brake effort feels really wooden and hard - almost like you'd have on a servo assisted system with the engine switched off... then it all comes back on the next lever squeeze .

odd.

I would not buy a road bike without ABS anymore. Yes it has it's moments when you lose traction rebounding off a small bump and it backs off the brakes for you, but it sticks them back on pretty damn quick. For me the benefits of the invisable ABS guardian watching out for the slippery moment is a no brainer. Off road, it is dangerous hence the ABS Off button.

I had an F650GS (twin) loan bike.

I was going back to pick up me 1200 via Newcastle's Central Motorway.

As I entered a sweeping right hand bend I saw the traffic was backed up so I braked.
The front began to fold and then came back.
As I stopped the stench of diesel was obvious.
I stopped 2 metres behind the last car.

If left to my own skills I would have wrapped the loan bike and hurt meself.

:)

Then you're doing something wrong!:augie
:D

Couldn't agree more Tim :thumb

Wouldn't thank you for ABS ... had plenty of accidents over the years, and having ABS wouldn't have prevented one of them :blast

Here we go.. here we go.. here we go ........

We'll have to disagree Michael.. as ever..

BUT: ABS will stop you in the shortest possible distance in an emergency.

You might be better getting some training.:D

It's not the ABS so to speak, it's that wooden feeling you get when it bumps, try it next time you go over a speed bump, hit the brakes when you come off the bump.....it won't stop. Then go back with the ABS switched off....you'll have no probs.

Picture the seen...your pulling up to traffic, breaks on....you hit a small bump...Levers kind of sieze on you and extend your breaking time by 2 feet.....the traffic is one foot away!!!

it's happened to me a couple of times...and I have recovered, Thankfully. I have eaten the seat with my arse a few times though. I just wondered if it was just me.

Rich I can get the ABS off on a temp basis...just stop and hold the button mate, trouble is I forget to do it.

I am much more confident rider with it off....but can see the benefits in the wet when you ride a bit more slowly. What to do on or off. Nothing beats 100% feel though.

Yeah ... we'll have to disagree Christopher, but not 'as ever'

We'll agree on the beer methinks.... :thumb

ABS, on my bike, or in my car, can easily be upset by a bumpy road surface. If you let go of the brakes and then brake again, then all is normal. If you haven't got enough room to let off the brakes and re-apply, then you're behond help anyway. I know the system isn't faultless, but one day it might save my life. Or even that of my 12 year son old who travels with me regularly.

RE: ABS

Would't Ride a bike without it:
However:

Not all ABS systems are equal.

I find BMW R1100/1200 Superb. a lifesaver.

I have at home, a smart for two diesel. Performance, not exactly frightening.

Unlike every other car I have owned with ABS, this one provides brown trouser moments every time one hits the slightest bump or crest when braking.

I cannot comment on your model's ABS, only on my own experience, but I have heard of your model's predelection for behaving similarly.
Myke.

I'd definitely prefer to have the abs than not, but I also hate when the brakes disengage when I hit a bump. I've had 2 yamahas with abs and neither of them were as sensitive to the road surface, the yamaha abs also felt smoother when it was activated. I don't know which actually stops you quicker in an emergency though.

Had my 1150 GS for 18 months
I don't ride like a granny Either, but they have never come on
I like the fact that they are there if I f**k up :nenau

Okay at the Risk of being gutted and hung out to dry ....................

Should you not be braking in advance of that point so that you have a safety cushion? No Matter how small?

Sorry if ya think I'm being a cheeky Cnut but I was out training on IAM Friday and the whole thing was focussed on being smooth and flowing and thinking in advance. and I had no Brakes i was on an R100GS para with a sticky back brake!!! Eh Steve?? :aidan

Yet I got no negative comments re my style just that I had left more room than last week and had chosen not to ride in the Dominant position

Then I explained the lack of effectiveness of Said Brakes and He said Ahh Better safe than sorry In that case it is fine to sacrifice position for safety :thumb

Sorry I seem to have Rambled Off there Micky I will add that ABS saved me twice Once I was drawn to a Young ladies Upper endowments on a cold day and I entered a Zombie like state and had to grab a BIG handful of brake Oly ABS saved me form going down as there was no time
The other time was gravel of a similar colour to the road just on the entrance of a corner and I was late braking
