I know there's the search button, and I've already spent a load of time doing just that....
Picked up a 97 1100 GS last week... every other start up or so the ABS lights flash alternately and the system doesn't initiate....

Next time it does everything as it should.... The bike has had a new battery before I picked it up.. but saying that its one of the older ones that needs filling....

Now I'm Mr.Crap with electrics... but the batttery is showing 12.2 volts on a multimeter when the bike is switched off.....

I'm leaning towards thinking that the battery just doesn't have the cranking power, which is causing the voltage to drop too much....and throwing up the fault

I think the earth is fine.... no dimming of the tail light when indicators on etc.....

Is my diagnosis more than likely correct? if so Another battery may be the answer... I obviously don't want to buy one if I'm wide of the mark :thumb2

What sort of Battery?

It only needs a slight voltage drop at cranking to set it off

Odyssey are best

TBH Bryn, even if you buy a new Odyssey it may or may not sort it. It's an endemic fault with the 1100, all three I've owned have had it every winter. it's a sign to wear another layer in the autumn and a sign to lighten the padding when it stops in the spring.

There are technical fixes out there involving re-wiring relays to avoid the voltage dip but none are foolproof and all introduce some other peculiarity to start up :blast.

My advice (FWIW)? Live with it till the first set of traffic lights and then restart with it warm, 9/10 times that should cure it. In the 12 years I've had 1100s I can still count on both hands the times the ABS has kicked in...:rob

Welcome back to the 1100 fraternity by the way, the first oilhead AND the best :thumb

It's a Yuasa, cost the previous owner about £50 I think ...

Thanks for the advice and the welcome back :thumb

It could also be the starter motor, another well-known issue with 1100s. The magnets can come loose, or the motor gets gunged up. In either case the motor takes more current, leading to the ABS fault.

1150 GSA -No ABS,is the way forward......... ;)
hope you get her sorted
