ABS linked brake?

hi.

just wondered if the brakes on the ABS F800 are linked? Here's why:

had some issues with the rear brakes on a very nearly new bike at point of collection. Calliper was not releasing and over heated the rear. no lock ups just a very blue disc and no pedal with boiled fluid.

returned to supplying dealer and was sorted.

Sunday, nice ride out in wales on tarmac (having stopped at tourabling to buy/fit new zegas) Isabelle (riding the f800) goes to brake in a 30 zone and slides nicely ino the rear of my 1200.

Both bikes are damaged but not un-ridable.

I jump on the 800 to check wtf was going on as Iz was quite shaken. no front brake action at all until almost FULL lever applied. this is out of nowhere. they had worked fine up until then.

A number of start stop actions with progressively more brake applied and the lever comes back, normal braking is resumed.

Gingered the bikes home (having gaffa taped and strung the GS1200 pannier back on). The F800 performed fine, no fade off or loss of brakes. So its not pad knock from warped discs.

Wondering, as I've never played with ABS units, if the front/rear is linked?

Anyone experienced anything like this before?

suggestions on a postcard to: "HOW MUCH? for a new beak on a GS800?!"

Bit scary. Glad it wasn't a worse shunt.

Madame has an 800 - definitely not linked. There would be loads of extra piping if it was.

Someone will be along in a while with more useful info re ABS systems. Does sound like a fault.
 
A small bump may well remind us all of our mortality.

I've had services on my F800 & there's been one time when I've needed to re-prime the pressure in the front-brake. Constant steady pumping till hard then, some slow pumping whilst moving at steady speed.
 
Brakes definitely aren't linked, but it does sound like you have a faulty ABS unit. Maybe BMW can do a code read on it and see if there's anything stored?
