ABS not working ?

Hi Guys
Right I tried all the things i could reset procedure made sure battery was fully charged, stopped along the road switched off and started again etc etc, reset procedure gives normal response as expected but I still get alternate flashing lights all the time. Anyone got ideas before I either
A: Get a very large bill from local BMW shop
or
B: Remove the annoying flashing lights bulbs and do without ABS

Don't know if it has the same type of faults as my servo ABS R1150GS, but something that can cause faults on them is the brake lever switches. Check that the levers are going all the way back to where they should and that nothing (such as crud) is stopping them.

Had the same fault on a 1100GS Batt starst engine ok but not enough power to kick ABS of even after a run Batt not holding enough charge had to replace Batt.

Have you checked the front wheel spindle?

I know it sounds daft, but I had a similar problem where the ABS lights would come on as I was accelerating hard. I thought it was because I'd fitted alloys - Jeffries had said they'd had reports that the ABS "brain" didn't recognise the swap & could fault at high rpm. The front wheel now spins faster in relation to the rear & the ABS doesn't like the new speed differential as it's set up to recognise the 19"/17" combination of the std rims.....

I rode around it for a while until I was checking the front brakes, one time, & found the spindle pinch bolts & retaining bolt were all loose (finger tight). This meant that the sensor gap was all wrong so it registered the fault & started flashing.

To this day, I'm not sure why they were all loose (own fault probably) but I check them much more frequently now.....

Thanks for the pointers guys, gave them all a go but no luck, looks af if I will be removing the bulbs to the flashing lights, I have heard some horror stories of extremely large repair bills for ABS

Tried with the new battery yet? Are the gaps correct between wheels and sensors and theres no misalignment if you rotate the wheel and check the gaps?

When starting the bike is all the electrical power from heated grips, lights or some accessories you have are switched off so ABS could get enough power? And after turning ignition on leave few seconds time (let it do few flashes) before starting the engine so it could get the maximum voltage up.

On cold days the battery doesn't have enough voltage for ABS to start too, so if you ride the bike warm about half an hour the battery should get more warm (=more voltage) too, so try to restart the ABS then.

If no help.
Get the bike to BMW dealer then, they should have speciefic ABS diagnostic tool. ABS brain stores errors causes in it's memory, so it's possible to trace the fault with diagnostic tool as far as i know. Doing simple quick diagnostic shoudn't be a expensive one too.

battery voltage.

try using some jump leads from the car - start the bike - remove leads - go for a ride.

that'll pump enough extra voltage in to set the abs - if this doesn't do it - Hello Dealer (

I will give the jump from the car a go, at least this will give me a definitive, if it does the trick then a new battery is in order, if not then I will live without it I guess, or try to get a reasonably priced diagnostic job done at the dealer. Someone suggested using a Hawker Battery, little on the pricey side but allegedly they are the business anyone got any experience with them?

abs not functioning

My abs has decided to stop working,i have read the threads in this forum and will try the ideas suggested.
The battery has been down but fully recharged and i have had a blown fuse for the rear light when fitting an autocom pro rider,the autocom will not run on the 12v power,i'm not sure if these are connected.I would appreciate any help as it is a bit frustrating.
My bike is an 02 adventure.Is it possible to damage the abs or disable it by shorting a wire to the rear light?

Bruce it sounds like its just switched off. With the engine idling, push the ABS switch down and turn igntion off. Then start up as normal and the flashing lights should go off as you pull away.

They are the business, and worth looking around for a deal. I bought mine (in Holland, no good to you) from a car parts wholesaler, and paid just a bit more than a BMW Gel battery. I have had mine for a year, and it has only given me an ABS fault once: return from holiday after 3 weeks, while alarm has been on, and it was cold. Since then, it's done the job every time. Starting with lights on, heated grips on, GPS attached, intercom installed and talking to the wife, no problems whatsoever. Top stuff.

I had the same problem with my 1100GS. The reset instructions here would fix it for a couple of starts but eventually the constant flashing would come back.

In the end the solution was a new battery, just not holding enough oomf (excuse the technicalities) to kick off the engine and the ABS.

Oh yeah, it doesn't like cold either - even with a new battery, topped up with an Optimate fairly recently, starting early in the morning at the moment means a mile or so with flashing ABS lights before a restart will reset it.
