My 98 1100GS has an annoying habit of abs malfunctioning......at the last service just before Xmas at BVM Moto they discovered the battery was tired and after replacement the abs warning lights behaved properly....until a couple of days ago when they starting their flashing routine again. I have charged the battery but abs problem persists....any suggestions??....is this a common problem and do I have to book the bike in to have it sorted or is there an easy fix?

Easy fix, its cold so you start the bike and ride 1 mile till it all heats up therefore heating up the battery. Stop the bike and restart. ALL O.K. but as some say what a pain in the arse.

Expensive fix, it has been said that the culprite for the ABS not working is the sarter motor. New starter = ABS O.K.

I know which I would choose.....

Plus remember that you can reset the abs yourself by grounding the middle wire under the riders seat and holding the abs button down for around 10 seconds...

Yep, change the starter motor, if it's really bothering you. Otherwise a restart after a couple of minutes riding should do it.

'they all do that sir'

It's a little bit annoying but not worth forking out on a new starter motor if you ask me. Mine does the same and after the second start, the abs works fine.

Yip mine to, changed the battery, made it better, but still does the flashing routine first thing in the morning.

Same as ther guys above, only I leave mine warming up a few minutes before setting off for work and then restart it. Small thing to do but very anoying.

Had the same on my K75S. Buying (and using) a trickle charger meant only having to do the restart routine when it was very cold out. Turning off headlight, heated grips etc before hitting the starter also helps...

I have a 'gel' battery. Start with headlight on (dims itself) and hot grips on. No problems. Maybe the battery is at fault. Heard good things about Odessey batteries, but my gel works fine.

Thanks folks! Sadly the turn off turn on will not cure the problem...I'll try the reset thing with the wire under the seat.....can you give any more detailed instructions to do this so I don't screw it up?! I believe the battery is fine so maybe ultimately I will need a new starter motor......I wouldn't mind living without abs for a while but the flashing lights do my head in....and as far as I know they can't be turned off....(?)

Nope! But I may not be doing the "GROUND" end right.....any polite suggestions where I should attach that end of the wire?

The battery was new at Xmas and the optimate shows it as being in good cond so don"t think thats the prob..........

If i remeber I just grounded mine to the frame and it worked first time...

And by the way my bike had not been ridden for three years when I bought it and I still did not change the battery. So I reckon you've a good chance to get it to go.
