Chaps & Chapettes,

What is the correct proceedure when starting off on an 1150GS with ABS.
Do i hit the button then ride off? Don't hit the button? Hit the button, don't touch the brakes & ride off........all a bit confusing i know !!!
I know the simple answer is to 'read the manual' but that's not what us bloke's do...
Silly question i know......!?!...

If it's servo'd, turn the ignnition on without holding the brakes, then when all the noises have finished, ride off, after a couple of feet the light will go out to say all is well. That's it :thumb2

Should you want to deactivate the ABS until the engine is switched off, then you press the ABS button which will stop the lights flashing and leave one of them on permantly.

In normal circumstances, you just start the engine and ride off. The ABS lights should go off and you will hear a 'clickling' which is the ABS itself and nothing to worry about.

If the ABS lights flash alternatly, then turn ignition off and restart the engine. If they still flash then you could have a fault.

There is a bit more to all of this but this is the basics.

Yip, "bobble" is refering to servo ABS (later type), "JoeC" is refering to ABSII which is the earlier one. You know the difference as when you hold the brakes on (ignition on) with the later ABS you hear the servo working.

On both you ride off to engage without pressing any buttons. The ABS system has to reach over 4mphish to engage and with ABSII you will hear a clunk which sounds like something falling off the bike... and the ABS lights will go out...

As wrigsby points out- the above is only relevent to earlier non servo abs bikes. If you have servo ignore the above advice.

All of those above are different than my prosedure. I have ABS but not sure about other features.

Mine goes like this: first power on. Second i hit the ABS button and start the bike up. If i don´t press ABS button before starting it up ABS lights blinks.

Production date says 2002/02.

When you start the bike and the lights flash, just ride off, the lights should stop flashing, if they don't and you have servo, it could be your tail/brake light lamp (bulb) that is faulty. If your bulb is ok and the lights don't stop flashing when you ride away, then I think there could be a problem with you abs!

I thought that ABS is disabled by holding ABS button down while turning ignition on.

Oh well. Same difference. ABS seems to be working fine when no ligts are lit on dash. I´d rather be completly w/o ABS but since they are there so be it.

Peltsi, you should have ABSII for an 02/02 bike and once the bike has been started the 2 lights should flash together. If they do, just ride off and they will go out as the ABS engages. If they are alternately flashing then the ABS won't engage but the brakes will be the same power.

You don't need to press the ABS button unless you want to disengage it.

Thanks guys,
Confussed? I am now !!
iI'll give it a go by not pressing the button at all.
It's a 2002 (02 plate) Adventure.
How do i tell the difference between SERVO ABS & ABSSII ?

FFS, why are you pressing any buttons. Just start it up and ride it. The abs lights extingush once you're on the move, not with the bike stationary :blast. .

Mainly cos the previous owner told me to press the button right after i turn the power on.

Sadly i have to wait over 2 months before i get to try these new sfuff. It´s -20 celsius outside terrible amount of snow. Shit. Think i´m gonna sell my bike before summer.

Be much easier for him if he spent 5 minutes reading the handbook.

Agreed:thumb2
However, from his location & his literacy skills he probably hasn’t got one or understands what it says:D
But, whatever, he is asking for assistance, and it sounds like that what he has been told in the past is either wrong or he has misinterpreted it.

Or don´t want to read the manual.

But this serves me right asking questions about 10 year old bike. Everyone has to know these things by now.
