Sorry if I'm going over old ground but to be clear - on my new GSA 2008 (which if the dealer can get their sh%t together I'll collect later today) I need to be cautious of the canbus. I've had a bit of a read on here so this is what i've taken from the stuff i've read:-

Because we will be plugging in heated gear for me and "the boss", and I've got a bog standard optimate then what i should do is get to the battery under the seat, add a heavy duty wire from the battery to a fuse box and then take off power from the fuse box for the optimate/heated clothing and anything else that we need.

This will avoid buggering up the brains of the bike.

Is this right?

Mine is wired directly to the battery - the Optimate lead is fused anyway, so didn't bother with a separate fuse box

Been fine for the last 6 years

What he said.
I've got a Feed Cable for my Heated Clothing connected direct to the Battery via its own Fuse as well as the Optimate Lead.

It's not about 'buggering up the brains of the bike', it's just that, instead of a fuse, the bike uses an electronic overload cut-off on the accessory socket which is set at about 5Amps.
So, if you want to draw current higher than that you need to do, as you suggest, wire in a separate supply.
The only thing I would add to your plan is, if the fuse box is going to be any distance from the battery, add a main fuse on the feed to the fuse box, as close to the battery as you reasonably can.
Otherwise this main feed is unprotected and, as its heavy duty, if it chafes or gets nipped, and causes a short, very bad things will happen.

I have an Odyssey battery but when that eventually packed up or when I feel the need for something fancy, I want a Lithium starter battery. They are much smaller than lead acid, much less self discharge (10% over 12 months), no damage even when unused for months at a time, much longer life and a much smaller package.

If you are thinking of buying an Optimate and you don't know the quality/age of the current (sic) battery, a Lithium could be a good option. Cost will be similar to lead acid plus Optimate.
