I see there are a number of past threads on this but my question has not yet been answered.

I've just bought a new GSA 1200 LC and I own an optimate 4 (not CANBUS edition). I usualy connect lead to the battery on my bikes but reading posts on this I'm not sure? Will I need to buy a new charger and use the CANBUS socket or can I continue to use my std Optimate 4 direct to battery?

Thanks in advance.

I had the same issue, spoke to BMW and they said that it's fine to connect the optimate directly to the battery terminals. I did exactly that, works perfectly! If you have an alarm make sure it's disabled before disconnecting the battery.

is there an issue just leaving the battery in situ and charging straight to the battery terminals as described above, I note on my new GSA the battery is no longer under the seat, does this create any charging issues ?
thanks

If you can't get to the battery easily then you will have to fit a pigtail. It comes with some of the ctek chargers.

No issues created for me with the optimate charger connected directly the battery (in situ) terminals.

Thanks people, I will attempt to fit the battery charge lead asap and start charging the bike again.

GSBiker, I don't know from your post if lay the bike up for some time or you just like to keep the battery topped up, but if you remove the right hand cover there is an easily accessible positive terminal remote from the battery, I just connect my optimal to this and the negative terminal which is nearby. Job done.

12v Supply

I used suitable cable to connect to battery and then drilled rear left hand frame cover (just pops off) plastic cover and connected BMW/Hella female socket. Connect Hella male connector and charge via this socket which also doubles up for heated clothing and compressor if required direct from battery

Nice ! good thinking

Even neater is to fit an aux socket direct to the battery (via a fuse).
You can use this for a bog standard charger and also for high current items like heated clothing or a tyre compressor.
