Quick question if I may folks, the standard accessory socket on the GS/GSA 2014 model, is it designed to power down when the ignition key is removed.

I only ask as I have one of those over priced BMW twin USB sockets cables (£38) 😳
which even if nothing is plugged into the USB ports still drains power from the bike and has done so over the last few weeks to the extent the bike wouldn’t start a few days ago.

I would have thought they would have worked on a relay, no ignition, no current draw.

They power down after 5 min I think, assuming that the socket doesn't see a load; which it will with you adaptor fitted.

Charge battery, and remove adaptor, then see if it still discharges.

had the same prob as you OP. the bike battery went flat. I removed the lead ,charged the bike battery up again and had no probs since. Yes, the socket stays live when the bike is powered down for around min, But my feeling was if something is still attached to it, it stays live

Had the same problem. The usb device drains the battery. I purchased one from motoworks for about 16 pounds and it does not suffer with the same problem.

The socket does power down, however there appears to be a residual voltage of about 0.5 volt detectable with a meter when supposedly switched off. If there is nothing connected then no problem: if something is connected which offers a load, however small, then the battery will gradually drain.

Thanks for all the responses, much appreciated. Those in the know at my local BMW dealer thought it would be ok to leave the adapter plugged in which I have been doing hence the recent flat battery. Now that I know the score I’ll ensure it’s unplugged when not in use. Thanks again.

Sell it and but the motoworks version. You will have no problems. One day you will leave it plugged in and your bike will be flat. Happened to me. For the sake of 16 quid u can sleep a little easier

BMW has made the AUX outlet in dashboard available for use with a battery charger. The battery charger opens up the port by applying a voltage to the port. ZFE sees this voltage, and opens/reopens the port.

Even if I have not checked the very latest models, at least until recently, the spare connecter that is found hidden and used for extra outputs (the one subject of this thread) shares the port in ZFE with the outside port. Whenever you connect som electronic gismo to the port, the gismo quite often has a capacitor on its input. When the AUXport is shut of, there is still a voltage at the gismo, kept up by it's capacitor. This voltage is sensed by the AUXport, and the port reopens, behaving like if there is a battery charger connected.

To cure the problem, allow the AUX port to drive a relay which then connects the gismo.

Another option that I have not tried, but ought to work, is to connect the gismo with a diode connected in series, The diode will prevent the voltage feedback, thus allowing ZFE to close the port.

This one will probably do for a USB charger: https://www.ebay.com/itm/SR540-SB540-5A-40V-Schottky-Diodes-DIP-NEW/392189909277?hash=item5b5057191d:m:mB35DVRvW3cZXsXiZ7Ie2Pw:rk:7:pf:0

Appreciate what u say. However the motorworks one is connected for weeks at a time with no issues. Maybe it switches off properly and has a diode as such?

I can confirm that the bmw and ebay Chinese clone flattened my battery with in 7 days

Go figure?

Simplest solution is wire in an inline switch, thats what i did, and keep it switched off.

Hardly ever used it and as it was mounted behind the screen it made cleaning the screen a pain so eventually i removed it.
