My daughter has an Acer Aspire notebook running windows 7.
It switches on ok, but after selecting the user from the log in screen it doesn't allow you to type anything in the password box. The mouse pad works fine but pressing any of the keys has no effect.

Any ideas?

thanks

you sure its not one of the Fn keys that needs pressing, e.g. Fn + F9 (toshiba satellite set up)

have you tried plugging in a usb / ps2 keyboard to see if it will let you type

I've tried all the function keys and looked for anything obvious that might lock the keys. Unfortunately I don't have a USB keyboard to try.

I'm sure it must be something simple. It was working fine last night but she isn't aware of doing anything to it.

You have probably already done this, but if not try completely shutting down the computer as opposed to stand by or hibernation modes. Then boot is back up. I have fiddled with my acer lap top and cannot find any keys that turn the key board off.

Battery

Looking on the web it seems to a common problem, especially with the 5100. One suggestion is to remove the battery and then power up using mains power to see if a faulty battery is causing the problem.

I now seem to have some keys working so it may be a technical problem rather than something pressed by accident etc. I'll try the battery option then take it back to the shop as it's only a couple of months old.

Cheers
