I've just re-insured a car and the policy wording has this clause:

"22) Advanced Driver-Assisted Systems (ADAS)
We shall not be liable if Your Vehicle is fitted with Advanced Driver Assisted Systems (ADAS) that is not operative at
the time of an incident. We will not pay any claims for loss or damage to Your Vehicle unless all software and/or
safety updates are installed and up to date and all manufacturers’ guidelines followed. If We make payments under
the Road Traffic Acts, We reserve the right to recover any amount from You."

Seems like if you turn ADAS off you're not covered. I wonder how common this clause is.

Which is interesting, as how do they hold an individual responsible for a manufacturer updating the software?! Most is over the air, but some require a dealership. And they are not going to send letters/phone you to come in for an update!

it's in my Saga car policy

do car makers put these safety features behind a paywall? Residuals for some newer cars are tanking due to worries about longevity and costs as used buys. Jaecoos rented on PCP will be handed back at the end of terms as they are not worth the balloon payment.

Meanwhile, cars like my 2018 Audi A1, the last of the 2010-2018 mk1 version are holding their value. Relatively simple tech compared to the next generation that is proving very unreliable.

Did you enquire how much saving you would make if insuring a car with ADAS and a car without?.........doubt it, who would.
It is just another easy out clause that insurance companies can use to stop paying out, for any accident in the future.
Perhaps why insurance is so expensive these days, people buying new cars with more expensive repairs if it all goes wrong.
I am guilty of switching off this system in my neighbours car, as it's dangerous and bloody annoying with its constant Boing, boing's if over the centre lane lines. Same sound if 1 or 2 miles over speed limit. As for the steering vibration, pulls when over the traffic lane lines, that is the worst.
Two presses on a certain button switches it off, by default it comes back on when car is restarted every time.

I'll have to sort out the Pre-Sense on Karen's Audi SQ2 - I assume this is the same sort of nonsesnse.

I’m more concerned about what the situation is if you have the systems and switch them off, which is possible even in post 2024 cars.

what happens when the system fails ? and the driver hasn't turned it off ? does he know it has failed ?
Oh yes, you’ll definitely know. A Christmas tree of warning lights will illuminate your dashboard together with a serenade of bingly bong noises.

A front ABS sensor failed on my van which put the van into limp mode since the Abs sensor is used for the “forward collision control” which I leave switch off as it kept slamming the brakes on for no apparent reason

What about Stop/Start?

I always turn that fecker off ……

And ABS on my Tenere 700 - turned off
Depends if they think that’s ADAS. I’d say stop start isn't, but ABS is.

Murky waters. I turn the whole lot of ADAS bollocks off in the car, not that there’s much anyway but in a loaner I had this week I had to turn off 11 different systems to stop it making noises at me.

And then it still beeped madly if another car got within about 5 meters

my insurance broker , once let me drive his new Mustang , i drove 50 yards with the TC turned off .
i thought ???? what if i crash it , the first thing he is going to check is ??? ...is it on or off ?
i turned it back on .
