Ive been dekitting my GS of parts i plan to swap to my GSA when it arrives. One of the parts i added to my GS was BMWs cylinderhead protectors, the ones that attached to the Cam covers and can be used with the engine bars.

When i removed them today i was very dissapointed to find theyve marked the cam covers. Firstly this means Ive had to leave them on the bike, secondly ive now got to source a replacement.

Obviuosly id rather not have the same issue again. Can anyone recommend something that will fit with the GSA engine bars and doesnt mark the heads in the way the OEM ones did?

Cheers

Paul

Nippy Norman do them got them on mine and no issues
Wunderlich?

no sorry its the machine art ones like this

they are supposed to fit under bmw engine bars according to the blurb but I don't have the bars!
no marks on the engine covers when I last checked (aftera couple of years of them being on the bike)

machine art do fit under the bars of the gsa, i did losen them to get them to fit then re-tighten the crash bars - bit of a faff

as for marks - no idea at the momment

The rubber inserts on early Machine Art head covers did mark the heads over time. I was able to clean the marks off almost completely, certainly enough to be able to transfer them to my new bike. Before I did though I contacted Machine Art and they admitted there was a problem and that they had changed the rubber compound on later head covers to cure it. They also sent me a set of the new compound rubber inserts free of charge.

Hi Paul,

When you say 'marked', in what way; abrasion / scratching, or rubbery deposit? Asking because I've got the same covers.

There were black marks on the covers, I thought it was rubber sitting on the cover but I tried polishing it off but with no success.

Is there not a design of engine bar that also protects the cam covers?
as I’m getting a GSA the bars are already fitted, Unbelievably the cam covers stick out a touch beyond the OEM bars. 🤷🏻‍♂️
I think the SW Motech bars and maybe others offer better protection.

I wonder if the Wunderlich sliders you can get for the crash bars will put more space between ground and cylinder head in the event of a drop. Mind you it does feel a bit crash protection for the crash protection :D

I found these to be extremely exactly like extremely the same as the wunders.....

Note all of these protectors will mark the heads regardless of what runner is beneath it rubs the lacquer overtime. Easily solved with a polish but don't expect perfection when you take them off. It's not going to happen regardless of the brand

Do you mean that if the bike was on it's side the head would still hit the ground?

I hadn't looked..

yeah, if you look across the bars the cam cover protrudes just beyond the bars, it’s not much and depending how the bike lies it maybe ok.
I did even wonder about a few small spaces between the bars and the frame to space it out a little but I’m reluctant to mess with the mounts.
Have a look Mark, see what you think.

I’ll add, is the case on my 21 GS, maybe different on the GSA? Different bars?

I'll go pop a straight edge across mine in a bit and report back!

Needs a feeler gauge to measure any gap although it’s not protruding as such.

I guess the down side of a head cover is that means the cover will be the first point of contact.

Needs something that increases the bar diameter at the same time to share the load unless it's a rock to the head of course.
