I've moved to France and am trying to register my 02 ADV here. Anyone know if you can adjust dipped beam to throw from left to right?. Just been to B#W dealer who says the dipped unit does not adjust ( L to R or R to L) and you have to buy a new lens for 212 euros:( Trouble is that you have to have an attestation from said dealer saying bikes lights are correct for europe which then gets sent to B#W France plus a cheque for 140 euros. Feck me it's a lot of hassle and this is just the first stage in getting the Carte Grise (log book).

So, does anyone know whether ADV lights adjust or not?.

Thanks in advance.

Check the handbook

Hi Charlie

At work at the moment so cant check but I'm sure it says in the handbook how to change the direction of dip - quite simple - undo a couple of bolts & twist light unit one way or the other if my memory serves me correctly. Sure someone else will give you a more precise answer soon.

PS Lucky b@@@@r - love France - & the lovely quiet roads:)

Assuming it's the same as the std 1150GS (from memory as I can't find my manual) - remove screen, remove silver cover under screen (instrument cover), locate clamp screws on headlamp clamp, slacken screws, twist headlight, tighten screws. The word TOP will no longer be at the top, but the light will dip to the right. I do this when I go to France and it works fine.

If this doesn't make sense, post again and I will look harder for the manual.

Ta! Will try and have a fiddle in the morning and let you know if it works.

Charlie.

It is the same for the Adventure.

It takes a few minutes but I'd be interested to see if it would be considered ok for permanent use the way your post suggests.

I adjust mine once on the other side of the water and have noticed that as it only rotates about 2cm, all it does is lower the bit that in the UK lights up the nearside to avoid dazzling the Euro types. When I first used it adjusted this way I noticed that the roadside signs (in Europe) were all well illuminated as I passed by! In the dark there was even less light on the road than 1150 owners are used to!

I might be wrong, 'cos it's a year since I did it, but I think the degree of 'French sign illumination' is the same as in the UK (but on the other side).

But I think you are right to question the permanence of the fix. I think I read elsewhere on this site that E regulations demand that TOP appears at the top for permanent use.

Would take a very picky Gendarme to object though. :)

I had to do my lights when i moved back to the UK from Germany, because I was importing, I too needed a declaration from a Mechanic, saying the bike had been adjusted, so I got a 2nd had Speedo (with more miles on it! Damn!) and new headlight glass, only last night I was reading the manual, and it does indeed say you can take off the back cover, and rotate a lever (or similar, don't have the manual in front of me right now) and this will switch from left to right and visa versa!
Shame I didn't read the manual before getting the work done!

Good luck!

I have a very large hammer you can borrow Charlie, not for the bike though for 'Les Mines', lovely people.
