What exactly happened when the adventure was designed?

I've got an adventure, I used to have a standard GS.After 10,000 miles the standard GS was just fine, but after a mere 6,000 miles on the adventure,it is pogoing around like a mad thing...the rear shock seems to have NO damping whatsoever.

When BMW fitted the taller suspension, was it just a different spring, a different physical size shock body, or did they do something else as well, like alter the damping?

Yes ,I will be fitting aftermarket shocks, but whats the score...6000 miles on a pair of shocks!!??Or do I need to tear off across the sahara to really appreciate the mods BMW did to the suspension....

Anybody shed any light?

There are many owners of 1150 shocks that have died at 6-7k
including me !
Your the first ADV rider who's had probs that i know of .
I had mine replaced under warranty (spc) and only bought ohlins
because someone was selling a pair for £400 :D
I thought the shocks on the ADV were far superior compared to
the 1150's, when i took an ADV for a 2hr test i tried everything
to get the back to fade but no probs at all :)

Thanks for the reply Gaul!!

I thought the shocks were great too, when I picked it up from the dealer...maybe its my weight thats knackered them!!

I commute in the dark, and the constant to and fro from the suspension has my light miles in the air one minute...then shining on the front wheel the next. Not good for those downhill tight righthanders!!

Due a service soon..I'll get it checked out at the dealer, or I'll follow your route and go for the aftermarket shocks!!

I also have an Adventure. It had done just under 9000miles when I started to notice handling problems. Have had to bump the preload and damping up.

How can I get my dealer to check this out? Is there something I need to get them to inspect to decide if it really has gone tits-up?

Advice please.

Your damping oil has lost it's viscousity :( and as the showa shocks are sealed units they can't be replenished with fresh oil.
Have a word with the dealer they may swap your shocks with no umming and arring,
If not spread it on thick that the bike is unstable and unsafe as they will get worse.
Worked for me ;)

Yep, got my rear Showa replaced under warranty at 18k, no quibble. Front's still OK. Replaced with Ohlins now (it's only money....:()

My Adventure shocks are still good after 12K but a riding partner on an Adventure completely lost rear dampening at 4K and the dealer replaced it.

Marvelous

I'm coming up to 9000 miles on my Adventure, and I've had to adjust the rear preload and damping twice in the last couple of weeks to stop the rear doing silly things.

The worst thing is that the knackered rear shock has the effect of pushing the front in corners, which is not the nicest thing in the world.

The bike is only 6 months old
Should I push the dealer for a replacement, or bite the bullet and get Ohlins or WP front and rear

Wonder if my dealer will do me a deal on Aftermarket kit, bearing in mind the standard stuff is shite...
