Advice for visitors

Hello folks

Myself and a mate are thinking of heading your way for a couple of days next month.

We thought we might combine a first bike trip to that part of the world with a night at Charlie Boorman's live show in Newcastle.

Just looking for a bit of advice really on roads, places to stay, things to see.

A brief internet trawl has me thinking the things to catch are Bamburgh Castle, Hadrian's Wall (not sure where's best for this?) and the Angel of the North. Wadaya reckon?

Also, we'd need some (cheapish) accommodation within walking distance of the Journal Tyne Theatre in Newcastle with somewhere safe to park the bikes. Any suggestions gratefully received.

Thanks for that Borderraider. I'll drop them a line with my dates etc. Unfortunately, Mapsource, like most GPS/Comms devices, remains a mystery to me. A map on top of the tankbag is about as technical as i get

This place is in Whitley Bay: www.theavalon.co.uk and is proper biker friendly.

Whitley Bay is half an hour from Toon on "the Metro".....and would be a good starting point if you fancied the "Coast and Castles" route....

Bamburgh Castle only from the outside until March 1st.

Depending on the weather anywhere in the Durham dales or rural Northumberland the roads will be "interesting" (if the cooonsil ever gets them fixed)

The Armstrong Museum bit there is fascinating.

Me Aunty was over from Oz and we went to Bamburgh Castle. It was £16 or something daft to get in and I thought it expensive, but it was worth it.

Are you getting the ferry to Stranraer? If you are I can suggest a couple of nice roads for you to use which avoid the motorways and dual carraigeways

Aye Smiler, well Cairnryan which is more or less the same thing. We'd be fairly familiar with the first part of the run, over as far as kind of Moffatt/Peebles/Hawick etc. It's really in and around Northumberland and the east coast we wouldn't know so well.

Can I suggest you take A75 to Newton Stewart, then A712 from there, joins with A75 further on, from Dumfries the A709 to Lockerbie, B7068 to Langholm then the B6318 to Gilsland continuing on the B6318 (Military Road runs alongside Hadrians Wall) into the Toon

Getting off the ferry at Stranraer/Cairnryan on the bike and making progress to get ahead of the caravans and lorries is when they seem to catch our lot out, hence a steady run to and turn off at Newton Stewart

If your going to Kielder area / A68 north, be careful as the roads are a bit broken in places & holy, as in 'Foly Heck'. Freeze thaw, freeze thaw action going on.
