hi
i am new to this group

JUST BEEN OFFERED A 1150 GS
RIGHT HERE GOES
HOW DO I CHECK THE ABS
THIS IS WHAT IT IS DOING
SWICTH ON AND START TOP AND BOTTOM ABS LAMPS FLASH ALTERNATIVELY IF I PRESS THE ABS BUTTON THE TOP GOES OUT AND THE BOTTOM STAYS ON ALL THE TIME EVEN WHEN RIDEING THE BRAKES WORK FINE COULD IT BE THAT THE ABS HAS BEEN DISCANECTED
IT HAS JUST PASSED ITS MOT SO BRAKES WORK OK
ALSO THE FRONT ABS EXCITER RING ON THE FRONT DISC IS MISSING FOR SOME RESON
I/E THE BRAKES WORK FINE SO I PRESUME THE MISSING RING IS PUTTING THE SECOND LIGHT ON AND THIS MEANS ABS FAULT
SO HOW CAN I TOTALY DISARM THE ABS AND IS IT OK TO DO THIS

ALSO WARE WILL I GET AN OWNERS MANUEL FROM

THANKING YOU IN ANTICPATION

Owner's manual can be bought from a dealer.

Switching-on. The two lights should flash at ten hertz, when the circuit has finished testing itself the top light goes out and the bottom one changes to flashing at 4 hertz.

Do not start the engine until this stage.

Do not operate either brake lever until the system is displaying just the 4 hertz flashing light.

After moving off the bottom light should go out. If it doesn't you have no ABS.

Pressing the ABS button will do nothing after the ignition is switched-on.

To disable the ABS, turn-off ignition. Press the ABS button and then turn on the ignition. Release the button and press the starter. The bottom light should remain on to act as a reminder that ABS is disabled.

Switching off the ignition and back on again will re-set the ABS.

I don't know why your ABS ring is missing.

I don't know why your Caps lock is stuck on. ;)

That's not how mine work...

Ignition on. Both lights on, bottom one goes off, top one flashes at 1Hz for a few seconds during diagnostic check. Eventually goes off (sometimes after I've ridden off)... ABS and brakes work fine...

As for the missing ring, sounds like a different front wheel has been fitted and the ABS unit is detecting a fault. There's plenty of threads here on about disconnecting the ABS... try Search or see http://www.ukgser.com/forums/showthread.php?t=108423

and please switch off the CAPS LOCK, I'm getting a headache :rob

ABS is expensive to fix.
What year is the bike and is it a bargain?.
You CAN ditch the ABS if think you wont need it and replace the pipery with stainless fittings.Do a search.
Old batteries can cause ABS errors on start up.
Missing ABS rings are not a good sign of a looked after bike.
Post more details and pix if possible.

ABS

How different can they all be !My 1150 flashes both at the same time,if I hit the button too soon after turning the key they flash alternatley ,I assumed signaling a fault:nenau :nenau I'm confused.

What's a hertz and what are all the numbers about?

Apologies, it should read 4 hertz and 1 hertz. (1 Hertz = 1 flash per second).

Self-diagnosis with pull-away test.

The BMW Integral ABS performs self-diagnosis and a pull-away test to ensure operability.
Self-diagnosis is performed automatically when you switch on the ignition.

Warning:
Self-diagnosis is not performed unless both brake levers are in their fully released positions.
Only the RESIDUAL BRAKING FUNCTION is available until self-diagnosis is completed.

Release brake levers, if necessary.

Switch on the ignition.

Initially:
-ABS warning light flashes at 4 Hz.
-General warning light ON.

Self-diagnosis is in progress.

Then:
-ABS warning light flashes at 1 Hz.
-General warning light OFF.

Self-diagnosis successfully completed.

Start engine.
Move off,
-ABS warning light OFF (as of approx. 5 km/h (3 mph) road speed)
Pull away test successfully completed.
-BMW Integral ABS is available.

I think that's only for servo models.

It doesn't help that the original post doesn't say what version of 1150. :nenau

Mine is Servo ABS III (I should have made that plain too :o ).

agreed. Mine's pre all the servo stuff. The easiest way to test it is to fly up a wet road a Mach 3 and yank on all the binders.

If you fall off, the ABS may not be working!

Greg

ABS 2 or Integral ABS ???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

Sledge, sounds like you don't have abs whatever your version as the front wheel is non-abs. I have a 2003 and the abs suddenly failed just out of warranty. Managed to get Motorad to replace free of charge after a performance but if yours has failed as a previously used model it would be too expensive to fit the UPGRADED servo and other stuff to go with it - something like £1,400. I would assume you are interested in a bike with a defective system and adjust your offer. If you buy it either strip it all out or have it rectified. If I had known abot this problem I wouldn't have opted for abs as an expensive oe. But now having the upgraded version I am confident that the system could make my beemer a little safer for me. Really it is your choice.

You guys do talk some crap....I'm to tired to explain to you all. There is about 5 different versions of ABS that BMW has used over the years and only a few you could bypass(at alot of £££)and run normal brakes. The later stuff is so heavily built into the electrics of the bike it would not be feasible to chop it out and try and make it work, and you run into problems with master cylinder volumes.......
WHAT VERSION OF ABS IS HIS BIKE !!!
