I purchased an R1150RS today which I thought was a good buy, having covered less than 20k in 23 years, superb condition for the year, sounds and rides perfectly..

However, by the time I arrived home from the dealership quite some distance from me the inner outside face of the fairing both sides had badly burned paintwork, caused by the heat generated from the first 4 inches of exhaust pipe..😳

So disappointing, because overall the paintwork is fantastic, but now I’m more concerned why it is running so hot??

The pipes are slightly blue, not excessively, and it runs with five bars on the dash temp display as per normal..I can’t image BMW producing a faired bike where this damage is a consequence of an 100 mile motorway run home.

Any ideas folks, it’s not worth repainting if this is normal, should I wrap the first four inches with heat wrap which looks bad IMO..

Should I even continue to ride it..😵

Thanks in anticipation…🙏IMG_7999.jpegIMG_8001.jpeg

Buy 2 spare middle sections ,

When you stop to show off the steed of awesomeness, swap to the pristine parts ;) (y)

Sorry cant help, but it looks Pukka

Maybe the alternative would be heat reflective tape on the fairing??

Fix the problem , not the result (yet / now). Hot running usually indicates weak mixture ... I would start there (but am no expert)

TBH I’m more concerned if it’s normal for these machines to run this hot, I called the dealer who helpfully said ‘You mustn’t sit with these bikes running, you should start and ride away immediately’ 👍

I wondered if that included riding through traffic lights, and riding down the wrong side of the road when encountering traffic..🙄

Are you sure the heat damage wasn’t already there when you picked it up, but just didn’t see it ? I have an 1150 RT, and the fairing panels above the pipes show some signs of heat having affected them.

There is an instruction in the manual NOT to let the machines sit at high idle at rest

That's "usually" what causes that damage

Just buy one (is teh other side affected? Then buy two) Mid sections and replace and Do not idle at a stop for extended periods

It will all be good

Heat reflectuve tape is also an option but you need the bubbles rubbed out first

I seem to recall this being a known issue back in the day . Just as with yours on the fairing lowers. Calling Steptoe........

There was scorching on the offside, but I don’t remember seeing any on the nearside, or if there was it was negligible; I assumed as we have all concurred someone had left it on the side stand running..

Providing it’s not running hot due to some sort of engine management issue, with a potential to cause damage, I’ll look into some sort of high temp paint solution in due course.

I am interested to know if this was an issue with the RS from ownership/group knowledge; I did catch some traffic and traffic lights hard to avoid that on occasion.. :nenau

As the bike is so new to me Doc I don’t want to buy/repair new panels if it’s just going to happen again.

Have the panels been repainted prior to sale and if so has the paint not fully hardened ?
Damage looks new rather than a gradual degradation of the paint due to heat damage over an extended period of time , try a test of the hardness of the paint on those panels with your thumb nail , decent paint should not be soft and mark.

Yeah, I got the feeling the paint was thick and fresh also..👍

As said, well known for it... Anyone who has accidentally touched the headers after a run will know they are feckin hot...😳 Also same regarding repainted panels will blister... Original US 11RS's had lowers removed as I remember as they had had issues with fires by people leaving them running on the stand... 🙄 Cue legal issues by those litigious wonders....
