Liege to Calais route,advice please.
Is it best to go via E40 Brussels or E42 Lille? Travelling tommrw Sunday.
Thanks.

It's 2 hours 42 minutes.

Feck me, have you got a map?

It's not a challenge. If it weren't for the curvature of the earth, you'd be able to see Calais out of the window.

This needs checking out

thank you for your smart arse reply,so usefull.
I was hoping for a sensible answer from someone with your knowledge, like is it best to avoid Brussels and take the Namur,Lille option.

I have three memories of circumnavigating Brussels all of which were slow and busy, take the other option and seek out a more interesting route.

What is it you think is the problem with the motorway ring road around Bruxelles?

If you think it's going to be horrible around Bruxelles, take the motorway via Lille instead.

Still not sure? Take the motorway via Antwerp / Gent as an alternative.

Via Michelin's excellent website lists:

1. Via Bruxelles at 3 hours 26 minutes and 295 km

2. Via Lille at 3:36 and 311 km

3. Via Antwerp at 3:48 and 324 km

All on a Sunday morning. There is nothing to chose between them, except 22 minutes and 29 kms.

http://m.viamichelin.fr/# A great, free website with excellent assorted scale and detail maps built in, including the 'must do' green lined D roads, for those that would rather rip their eyes out than ever use a motorway.

A more interesting route? A very quick look at something approaching a decent map will tell you that genius suggestion will take you miles out of you way, but here goes:

Liege

Dinant

Rocroi

La Capelle

Or break off via Chimay and Avesnes

Cambrai

From Cambrai, it's the agony of whether to take the motorway or work your way a bit further west inland.

It's now Sunday morning, the thread having started just after 8pm on Saturday, for a journey to be made sometime on Sunday. The sun is shining, at least it is in Verdun and it's time to bite the bullet....

That was my memory too but not been on the E40 for years.
We are in Zell Mosel valley at the moment.
plan is to take the 258 through Monschau to Liege then the better of two options back to Calais for the afternoon train.

I would personally take the E42 via Lille, it's a more direct route, the Brussels ring can be a bit hectic most times, even on a weekend. My partner Regine is Belgian, and when we ride to Namur, which is accessible both ways, we prefer the E42, plenty of rest stops on route. Agree with Wapping, a visit to Dinant is good, plenty of places to eat, plus on Sundays, all the bikers turn out and park by the River Meuse. Ride safe!

Sitting in Zell? Why why the hell didn't you say so?

You could, depending on the time of your afternoon crossing and having half an eye on the clock that is now already with its hands at nearly 08:00, have gone a much more interesting way... Still, maybe not too late... Get your skates on, fire up the awesome steed, set out on the near horizontal to Cambrai and the job's a carrot, as LoIQ is prone to say. You'll do it.... And the possible nightmare of indecision over Bruxelles with its half remembered journey from hell will be removed from the equation.
